The Five Major Chart Families in BaZi
A practical map of Output, Wealth, Power, Resource and Companion functions—without turning a technical classification into a fixed personality or destiny label.
A chart family is a teaching map. A formal structure is a technical judgment.
The five families below group the Ten Gods by function relative to the Day Master. They are useful for orientation, but traditional structure analysis is more specific: schools differ in how they establish, name and validate structures, and some recognise special or follow-type configurations outside this five-family map.
A repeated element or visible Ten God does not automatically establish a structure. The Month Branch, seasonal command, exposed stems, roots, transformations, strength, useful function and the integrity of the whole chart must be examined together.
Day Master
The reference point used to derive the Ten Gods. It is central, but never the whole chart.
Month command
Seasonal qi and the Month Branch receive priority in many structure methods.
Coherence
A proposed structure must survive checks for roots, clashes, combinations, exposure and competing flows.
Five broad relationships between self and field.
Each family combines two Ten Gods with the same elemental relationship but different polarity. Read these as functional questions—not promises about personality, profession or fate.
Output · Eating God and Hurting Officer
The Day Master produces this function. It concerns expression, production, communication, problem-solving and what moves from internal capacity into visible output. Its value depends on whether the chart can sustain that release and whether the output connects constructively with other functions.
Wealth · Direct and Indirect Wealth
The Day Master controls this function. It can describe resources, stewardship, execution, exchange and responsibility for tangible outcomes. It does not guarantee money or entrepreneurship; capacity, support and real-world skill determine whether demands are manageable.
Power · Direct Officer and Seven Killings
This function controls the Day Master. It concerns standards, authority, accountability, pressure, boundaries and consequence. Constructive expression can involve discipline and responsibility; difficult expression can involve overload or coercion. Context decides.
Resource · Direct and Indirect Resource
This function produces the Day Master. It concerns learning, support, interpretation, recovery, protection and the frameworks used to make sense of experience. Resource can strengthen capacity, but excess or poor integration may delay application.
Companion · Friend and Rob Wealth
This function shares the Day Master’s element. It concerns peers, identity, autonomy, collaboration, comparison and competition for resources. Some schools do not treat Companion as a regular formal structure in the same way as Month-derived structures; use this category carefully.
What the five-family model cannot decide by itself.
It can organise inquiry
- Which functions receive seasonal or structural emphasis?
- How does the Day Master relate to those functions?
- Where does qi appear to flow, stall or compete?
- What hypotheses should be checked against lived evidence?
It cannot guarantee an outcome
- A Wealth family does not promise wealth.
- An Officer family does not guarantee leadership.
- Output does not automatically mean creativity.
- Resource is not proof of intelligence or spirituality.
- Companion does not predetermine friendship or rivalry.
| Shortcut | Why it fails | Better question |
|---|---|---|
| Most frequent star wins | Frequency is not season, strength, root or function. | What receives command and remains structurally usable? |
| Structure equals career | Symbolic functions do not replace competencies or labour-market evidence. | Which role demands resemble the chart hypothesis, and what does performance show? |
| One permanent personality | Context, development and timing alter expression. | Which patterns recur across several settings? |
| Good versus bad structure | Labels ignore coherence, capacity and conditions. | What is supported, strained, useful or contradictory? |
Classify late. Observe early.
Do not begin by forcing the chart into one of five boxes. Build the judgment in stages and retain uncertainty where competing interpretations remain plausible.
Verify inputs
Confirm date, time, place, time-zone history and boundary convention.
Read season
Establish Month command, climate and the Day Master’s available support.
Map functions
Derive Ten Gods, exposed stems, roots, hidden stems and major interactions.
Test structure
Compare candidate structures against the full chart and the school’s rules.
Verify expression
Compare hypotheses with behaviour, context, decisions and outcomes.
Luck Pillars modify the operating conditions. They do not replace the natal chart.
A decade or year can strengthen, weaken, reveal, combine with or challenge natal functions. This may change which themes are more visible or demanding, but it is clearer to describe this as activation and changing conditions—not as the person receiving a new natal structure.
Keep constant
The birth chart, its original seasonal context and the structural relationships established at birth remain the base reference.
Track movement
Assess what incoming stems and branches activate, whether capacity exists, what the environment permits and what evidence actually changes.
Translate structure into experiments—not commandments.
Compare functions
Map chart hypotheses to role demands, then verify with skill, motivation, feedback and performance.
Assess capacity
Ask what load can be carried now, what support is missing and which decision is reversible.
Sequence action
Use timing to plan preparation, tests and review—not to surrender responsibility to a date.
Connect structure with the systems that explain it.

Does every chart fit one of these five families?
The five groups are a useful teaching framework, but formal classifications vary by school and may include more specific regular and special structures. Some charts are mixed, contested or difficult to classify cleanly.
Is the strongest Ten God automatically the structure?
No. Structure analysis normally gives special attention to the Month Branch and season, then tests exposure, roots, interactions and whole-chart coherence.
Can my Luck Pillar change my natal structure?
It can alter emphasis and operating conditions, but it does not replace the birth chart. Describe the change as activation, support, pressure or modified expression.
Can chart structure choose my career?
No. It can generate hypotheses about preferred functions or pressure patterns. Career decisions still require skills, interests, constraints, opportunity, evidence and informed choice.
