Elegant Seal (華蓋)

Also called the Artistic / Spiritual Star. Signals solitary focus, scholarship, ritual, design sense, and the impulse to create enduring works. When balanced, it refines taste and deepens contemplation; when excessive, it isolates and resists worldly engagement.

Category: Auspicious Alt names: Hua Gai Family: DS1

What is Elegant Seal?

Elegant Seal (華蓋) is one of the classic auspicious auxiliary stars used in BaZi interpretation. It’s frequently grouped alongside other elevating stars such as Three Stages (三台), Bright Hall (明堂), and Dragon Pool (龍池). Its presence indicates refinement, ritual, solitary study, and creative craftsmanship.

Reference: appears in the auspicious set enumerations within DS1 sources.

How to Derive (Field Guide)

Primary method (widely used): Day Branch-based. Find your Day Branch. If it belongs to one of the 三合 trines below, then Elegant Seal “targets” the branch in the right column. If that target branch appears anywhere in your four pillars (Year / Month / Day / Hour), Elegant Seal is present.

Your Day Branch groupElegant Seal appears when any pillar contains
寅 Tiger • 午 Horse • 戌 Dog戌 Dog
亥 Pig • 卯 Rabbit • 未 Goat未 Goat
申 Monkey • 子 Rat • 辰 Dragon辰 Dragon
巳 Snake • 酉 Rooster • 丑 Ox丑 Ox

Classical mnemonic: 「寅午戌見戌,亥卯未見未,申子辰見辰,巳酉丑見丑」 — use Day Branch (or Year Branch) as the reference, and if any pillar “sees” the target branch, Hua Gai is present.

Alternative method: Year Branch-based

Repeat the same table using your Year Branch as the reference instead of Day Branch. Some systems mark Year-based Hua Gai with an asterisk; Day-based is the default in most modern schools.

Quick examples
• Day Branch = 卯 → Target branch = 未. If any pillar shows 未, Elegant Seal is present.
• Year Branch = 子 (using alt method) → Target branch = 辰. If any pillar shows 辰, Elegant Seal is present.

Multiple classical references describe Hua Gai as derived from the Day Branch primarily, with a Year-Branch variant also in use.
