Grand Duke, Year Breaker and Year Punishment.Pressure reveals the quality of the structure.

Grand Duke, Year Breaker and Year Punishment (太歲 · 歲破 · 歲刑) describe three different relationships to the Year Branch: repetition, direct opposition and punishment. None makes a year automatically bad.

Grand Duke · 太歲 · Tài SuìYear Breaker · 歲破 · Suì PòYear Punishment · 歲刑 · Suì XíngKey · Natal Year Branch
Grand Duke is not automatically fortunate, and Year Breaker or Year Punishment is not automatically disastrous. Each describes a structural relationship that must be interpreted through context.
Three forms of annual pressure

Repetition concentrates. Opposition mobilises. Punishment creates friction.

Grand Duke repeats the Year Branch and can magnify visibility, responsibility or an existing theme. Year Breaker is the directly opposing Branch and can signify movement, renegotiation or disruption. Year Punishment follows the traditional punishment relationship and can expose tension, constraint or repeated maladaptive patterns.

The formulas are different and should never be merged into the vague label “offending Tai Sui.”

Read the affected pillar, Ten-God function, combinations, clashes, useful structure and real circumstances before drawing a conclusion.

Complete Year-Branch lookup

Same Branch, opposite Branch and punishment Branch.

Use the natal Year Branch as the anchor, then locate all three targets separately.

Four-step method

Name the relationship before judging the result.

01 · ANCHOR

Find the Year Branch

Use the natal Year Branch for this reference table.

02 · DERIVE

Calculate three targets

Apply repetition, opposition and punishment separately.

03 · LOCATE

Identify the pillar

Determine where each target appears and what life function it represents.

04 · VERIFY

Read actual pressure

Observe responsibility, movement, friction and adaptive response.

Practical applications

Pressure can reorganise a life without destroying it.

Grand Duke

Own the responsibility

Expect greater emphasis on the repeated theme; increase preparation and accountability.

Year Breaker

Plan for movement

Build flexibility around changes, negotiations, travel or structural revision.

Year Punishment

Interrupt repetition

Notice rigid responses and recurring friction before they become self-reinforcing.

Integration

Protect the operating system

Prioritise sleep, communication, reserves and decision discipline during demanding periods.

Worked example

A Rat Year Branch returns Rat, Horse and Rabbit.

Zi repeats as Grand Duke, opposes Wu as Year Breaker and punishes Mao as Year Punishment.

From lookup to structural interpretation

Year Branch子 Zi · Rat is the natal Year Branch.
Grand DukeThe same-Branch target is 子 Zi · Rat.
Year BreakerThe opposite target is 午 Wu · Horse.
Year PunishmentThe punishment target is 卯 Mao · Rabbit.
VerificationLocate Zi, Wu and Mao, then assess actual concentration, movement and friction. Do not declare a bad year.
Interpretation safeguards

“Offending Tai Sui” is not a complete analysis.

No blanket bad year

None of the three markers makes an entire year uniformly negative.

No event certainty

They cannot prove accidents, loss, illness, conflict or separation.

No ritual pressure

Never frighten someone into purchasing a cure, ritual or consultation.

No formula collapse

Repetition, opposition and punishment are different structural relationships.

No isolated verdict

Read the whole chart, affected pillar, timing and lived conditions.

No fatalism

Preparation and adaptive action can materially change how pressure is handled.

Do not ask whether the year is “good” or “bad.” Ask what is concentrated, what must move and which pattern must stop repeating.

Quick FAQ

Separate annual relationships from superstition.

Is Grand Duke always negative?

No. It indicates repetition and concentration, which can bring visibility, responsibility, opportunity or pressure depending on context.

Is Year Breaker the same as Year Punishment?

No. Year Breaker is a direct opposition; Year Punishment follows a separate punishment table.

Do these markers predict a bad year?

No. A year contains multiple structures, choices and real conditions that cannot be reduced to one marker.

Why do some Year Punishment targets repeat themselves?

辰 Chen, 午 Wu, 酉 You and 亥 Hai are traditionally classified as self-punishments in this sequence.

What is the practical response?

Strengthen preparation where themes concentrate, preserve flexibility where structures oppose, and interrupt recurring behaviour where punishment appears.

Own the pressure. Move what must change. Stop repeating what no longer works.

The Grand Duke family becomes useful when traditional relationships are translated into structural awareness and responsible action.
