Solitary and Lonesome.Solitude is a condition—not a sentence.
Solitary and Lonesome (孤辰 · 寡宿), or Gu Chen and Gua Su, are paired Year-Branch markers associated with autonomy, self-containment, emotional distance and the way a person regulates closeness and private space.
Independence can protect identity without preventing intimacy.
Gu Chen is the Branch immediately after a three-Branch seasonal group; Gua Su is the Branch immediately before it. Together they describe the boundaries surrounding that seasonal field.
In interpretation, the pair can raise questions about self-reliance, guardedness, private processing and the balance between space and connection.
Use the natal Year Branch, place it in one of four consecutive seasonal groups, then seek both target Branches anywhere in the natal chart or a declared timing layer.
Each Year-Branch group returns one Solitary target and one Lonesome target.
Find the natal Year Branch group, then read the two boundary Branches.
| Natal Year Branch group | Solitary · 孤辰 | Lonesome · 寡宿 |
|---|---|---|
Chen · Dragon |
| 申 Shen · 酉 You · 戌 Xu | 亥 Hai · Pig | 未 Wei · Goat |
Group rule: 亥子丑→孤寅/寡戌 · 寅卯辰→孤巳/寡丑 · 巳午未→孤申/寡辰 · 申酉戌→孤亥/寡未.
Calculate both markers, then observe how distance is regulated.
Find the Year Branch
Place the natal Year Branch inside one of the four seasonal groups.
Derive both targets
Read the Branch immediately after the group as Gu Chen and the Branch before it as Gua Su.
Locate each marker
Check the four natal Branches and keep the two targets separate.
Verify the pattern
Observe actual autonomy, withdrawal, communication, boundaries and relationship behaviour.
Space becomes healthy when it supports connection rather than avoiding it.
Autonomy and identity
Independent thinking, self-reliance and the ability to function without constant validation.
Privacy and restoration
Time alone may restore clarity when it is chosen rather than imposed.
Distance and communication
Relational distance becomes manageable when needs and boundaries are communicated.
Connection through conduct
Compatibility and intimacy must be judged through real behaviour, not a severe star name.
A Rat Year Branch places Solitary at Tiger and Lonesome at Dog.
Zi belongs to the 亥子丑 group: the Branch after the group is 寅 Yin, while the Branch before it is 戌 Xu.
Calculate the pair, then check lived expression
Distance is a pattern. It does not dictate destiny.
No permanent-loneliness claim
Neither marker proves that a person will remain alone or unmarried.
No gender stereotype
Do not revive claims that Gu Chen belongs only to men or Gua Su only to women.
No divorce prediction
Relationship outcomes require whole-chart analysis and real relational evidence.
No pathologising solitude
Privacy, introversion and independence are not defects by themselves.
No single-star reading
Read the full chart, Day Branch, relationship structure and lived behaviour.
No avoidance excuse
The marker should not justify disappearing, withholding or refusing communication.
Read Gu Chen and Gua Su as a distance question: how much space restores the person, and when does space become disconnection?
Place autonomy inside the wider relationship system.

Are Solitary and Lonesome the same star?
No. They are a paired calculation with two separate target Branches. Each should be located and interpreted independently.
Which Branch is used for the calculation?
This page uses the natal Year Branch. Find its seasonal group, then read both target Branches from the corresponding row.
Do these stars mean someone will never marry?
No. They cannot establish permanent loneliness, divorce, incompatibility or an inability to form a lasting partnership.
Are the two stars gender-specific?
No. Avoid inherited claims that assign Gu Chen only to men or Gua Su only to women. Use the same responsible lookup for everyone.
What if neither target appears in the natal chart?
The natal presence test is not met. A timing layer may introduce either target later, but it should be labelled and assessed separately.
