The BaZi Canon — Yuanhai Ziping
Structure over slogans. Day Master at the center, seasonal qi as climate, Ten Gods as roles, and a single Yong Shen that resolves real tension.
Positioning — what this page covers (and excludes)
This page explains what Yuanhai Ziping is, why it anchors BaZi, how to read structure correctly (Day Master → strength → structure → Ten Gods as roles → Yong Shen), and how to avoid modern noise. It does not teach Di Tian Sui refinements or Zi Ping Zhen Quan commentary; those get their own pages. No calendar mashups, no pop fusions.
Thesis — the book that forced discipline onto “birth data”
Yuanhai Ziping is where BaZi stops being adjectives about elements and becomes a rules-based analysis of structure. The text makes you decide what actually has force in a chart (seasonal qi, stems/branches, real rooting) and select a Yong Shen (useful spirit) that resolves tension. Name the structure; resolve the tension; act accordingly.
What “Yuanhai Ziping” actually is
A Song-era compilation within the Ziping lineage, preserved through recensions with chapter variance. Treat it as a method codex: Day Master-centered reading, seasonal weighting, role of resources and authority, and structure classification. Practitioners start here because it lays down the non-negotiables you measure yourself against.
How it came about — concise textual timeline
- Proto-Ziping period: four-pillars reading crystallizes into a structural diagnosis anchored on the Day Master.
- Song compilation: methods congeal — seasonal qi dominates, roots matter, roles are defined via the Ten Gods.
- Ming–Qing transmission: commentaries expand examples; the skeleton persists.
- Modern editors: rearrangements and mnemonics appear; serious schools still begin “structure first, Yong Shen second.”
Working grammar — the moving parts in order
- Day Master in the center: year/month/day/hour are context; the day stem is the throne.
- Strength evaluation: start with season (climate) → tally help (resource, companions) and control (officer/power) → check root depth in branches.
- Ten Gods as roles: functions in a power flow, not adjectives for personality.
- Yong Shen: the single corrective that resolves the chart’s main tension.
- Structure before slogans: follow, half-follow, authority-balanced, resource-driven, output-led, wealth-led, etc.
Seasonal qi — why the month steals the show
The month branch carries the climate and industry of the chart. It sets the default bias: which elements are naturally supplied and which are starved. Off-season dominance must be proven via roots, assistance, configurations, and timing. Ignore the month and you misread force; worship the month and you miss the exceptions that define mastery.
From parts to pattern — forming a governing structure
- Identify Day Master nature and season.
- Tally helps/hurts: resource (印/枭), companions (比/劫), output (食/伤), wealth (财), officer/power (官/杀).
- Locate roots in branches; weigh stems honestly; test combinations and clashes without wishful thinking.
- Propose a structure: normal, follow, half-follow, pure, authority-balanced, output-led, wealth-led, etc.
- Choose a single Yong Shen that unlocks the structure’s tension; demote the rest to supporting cast.
- Refute yourself: if your chosen Yong Shen only works under a different structure, your structure call is wrong.
Ten Gods — roles that move money, power, and risk
- Resource (印/枭): feeds/protects the Day Master; excess breeds dependency. Properly used, it refines Officer and stabilizes authority.
- Companions (比/劫): coalition and competition; can carry a follow structure or steal in a normal one.
- Output (食/伤): production/exposure; monetizes into Wealth; overexposure invites penalty.
- Wealth (财/偏财): acquisition and responsibility; needs Output supply; must be protected from Companion theft.
- Officer/Power (正官/七杀): order, status, constraint, risk; Officer requires Resource to civilize; naked Killing punishes.
“Proper vs. deviant” marks operational risk, not morality tales.
Choosing Yong Shen — the most abused step, cleaned up
Name the single main tension—over-strong Day Master, leaking Output, harsh Officer, Companion theft, dry Wealth, pale Resource. Choose the single god that fixes it within this structure. Confirm supply: does that spirit arrive cleanly through stems/branches, or is it a mirage created by wishful combinations? If it only works under another structure, recalibrate.
Case skeletons — method over theatrics
Case A — Follow-Output (从食伤)
Weak Day Master in an output-rich season; companions absent; resource minimal; output rooted and timely. Yong Shen = Output. Build, publish, ship. Avoid authority games requiring unrefined Officer. When pillars amplify Output→Wealth, accelerate; when Companions surge, lock access and systematize revenue.
Case B — Officer refined by Resource (官印相生)
Strong Day Master with present but harsh Officer; clean Resource roots available. Yong Shen = Resource. Accept constraints, cultivate credentialed influence, operate within institutions; resist grandstanding Output that provokes harsher Power.
Case C — Companion Theft (比劫夺财)
Strong Day Master with heavy Companions; Wealth weak. Yong Shen = Wealth (with root). Institutionalize acquisition—contracts, custody, escrow, incentives—so flow is hard to steal. Reduce pooling; make roles and rights explicit.
What Yuanhai Ziping does not permit
- Personality-only readings that ignore Luck Pillars.
- Declaring follow structures without proof (season + roots + absence of resistance).
- Mixing calendars/systems and still calling it BaZi.
- Treating Ten Gods as vibes rather than roles in a power flow.
- Painting flattering adjectives over ugly structures.
Luck Pillars — structure meets weather
Luck Pillars permit or choke the Yong Shen. If pillars supply your useful spirit, press—with the structure’s posture. If pillars deny it, consolidate or re-route. When pillars flip a structure (e.g., follow → normal), goals and tactics must change. A follow-wealth campaign can’t be run under a dry-wealth decade by belief alone.
Work & relationships — strictly within Yuanhai logic
Work (roles)
- Output-led: creation/branding/product/teaching—where making and showing convert. Risk: overexposure. Fix: cadence, editorial control, contracts.
- Officer-balanced: regulated arenas—law, finance, governance, medicine—with credentials and rules. Risk: rigidity/persecution. Fix: Resource refinement and inner alliances.
- Wealth-governed: acquisition/allocation—ops, trading, logistics, property—backed by systems. Risk: leakage. Fix: custody and incentives.
- Follow structures: thrive when the field supplies the leading god; suffer when pride fights the season.
Relationships (fidelity, boundaries, motive)
- Companions heavy: strong loyalty demands can coexist with resource theft. Design transparency and separate accounts.
- Harsh Officer without Resource: control dynamics. Remedy: rules and process; refine with Resource or the bond collapses.
- Wealth weak + strong Companions: gifting turns into obligation and resentment. Use explicit exchanges—time, money, service—recorded and finite.
- Output overflow: charm plus exposure; set friction—availability, visibility rules, consequences.
Rule: test with time, not speeches. Start with small, reversible cooperation and observe who honors boundaries without emotional invoices. Fail small, fail early.
Study plan — how to actually master the text
- Pass 1: read Yuanhai Ziping clean; underline rules that name force (seasonal bias, roots, roles).
- Pass 2: use a five-box worksheet—DM; season; helps/hurts; roots; structure candidates—then a sixth box: “This chart wants X because it resolves Y.”
- Yong Shen log: record choices and outcomes. Did pillars permit your pick? Did life confirm the structure?
- Index: season → DM → structure; learn recurring supply chains.
- Monthly review: audit worst calls. Where did pride bend the rules?
Edge and ethics — power without self-harm
- Exploit what is rewarded; stop where structure breaks.
- Hide strength when Companions are hungry; pay for enforcement over applause.
- Borrow institutions when Officer is strong; win inside the rulebook with Resource refinement.
- Bank gains before a pillar flip; deleverage when weather turns against your Yong Shen.
- With customers: when Output→Wealth is favored, publish and sell; otherwise, curate and license.
Closing — why this page exists
Yuanhai Ziping keeps BaZi honest. Make a clear structure call and a single useful-spirit choice that resolves real tension. If you can name structure and Yong Shen in one sentence, you can plan cleanly, hire wisely, and love sanely. If you can’t, you are rationalizing, not reading.
