Hexagram 49 · 革 · Gé

革Ge.Revolution.

Lake stands above Fire: opposed forces transform one another and an existing form can no longer remain unchanged. Ge concerns legitimate reform, correct timing and the trust earned when necessary change proves itself.

䷰
Necessary change still needs timing, legitimacy and a form capable of replacing what it removes.
Core situation

Transform the order only when trust, timing and replacement align.

Ge originally evokes the changing of an animal hide and extends to renewal, reform and revolution. Water and Fire occupy one structure but pull in different directions.

Belief may come only after the change demonstrates its value. Correct reform does not demand premature trust; it earns trust through appropriate timing and coherent results.

Structural anatomy

Lake above. Fire below.

Water and Fire counteract each other. Their unresolved incompatibility makes transformation necessary.

Strategic application

Replace what no longer works—then stabilise the new order.

Work and leadership

Build the case, establish timing, secure legitimacy and define the replacement before dismantling the old system.

Relationships

Change agreements when the old form cannot hold truth, but distinguish deep transformation from temporary compliance.

Timing and decisions

Too early creates resistance; too late preserves dysfunction. Act when necessity and readiness converge.

Diagnostic

Ge is constructive when change earns legitimacy and creates a viable successor.

Aligned expression

  • The old form is genuinely exhausted.
  • Timing is established.
  • The case survives repeated review.
  • The new order is consolidated.

Distorted expression

  • Change serves impatience.
  • Force substitutes for trust.
  • Critique exists without replacement.
  • Revolution never ends.

Change the order at the right time—then give the new form somewhere stable to live.
