旅Lu.The Wanderer.

Fire moves across the Mountain without remaining: visibility travels over unfamiliar ground while secure belonging is absent. Lu concerns temporary position, disciplined conduct and the modest success available to those who remember they are guests.

When the ground is not yours, success comes from clarity, restraint and respect for the conditions that temporarily hold you.
Core situation

Protect integrity when belonging is provisional.

Lu describes travel, exile, transition and every situation in which one operates outside a settled base. The traveller has limited authority, incomplete information and fewer margins for error.

Small success is possible through correct conduct: secure the essentials, treat hosts and helpers well, avoid unnecessary display and do not mistake a resting place for permanent possession.

Structural anatomy

Fire above. Mountain below.

Mountain provides a temporary stopping point; Fire illuminates and moves onward. The traveller must know when to rest, what to carry and when to leave.

Hexagram statement

The governing proposition

The Wanderer: small success. The traveller’s constancy brings good fortune.

Commentary on the Judgment

Rest with clarity and adapt to strength

The yielding finds the centre outside and responds to the firm; stillness attaches to clarity. Therefore modest success and the traveller’s correctness are auspicious.

The Great Image

Decide clearly without prolonging confinement

Fire on the Mountain: The Wanderer. The cultivated person is clear and cautious in applying penalties and does not prolong imprisonment.

Six changing-line positions

Six ways to conduct oneself away from home.

LINE 1

Preoccupied with trivial mattersThis invites disaster · Changes to 30 離

Small-minded behaviour makes a vulnerable position worse. Preserve dignity and attention instead of quarrelling over trifles.

Petty conduct reveals an impoverished aim and brings trouble.

LINE 2

Reach the lodgingKeep the resources and gain a trustworthy servant · Changes to 50 鼎

The essentials of travel are secured. Shelter, resources and reliable assistance create a sound temporary base.

With trustworthy service, there is ultimately no cause for reproach.

LINE 3

Burn the lodgingLose the servant; constancy remains dangerous · Changes to 35 晉

Harshness destroys shelter and support. A traveller cannot afford to mistreat the people or systems on which temporary stability depends.

Burning the lodging causes injury; improper treatment of those below loses the relationship.

LINE 4

Rest with resources and an axeThe heart is not at ease · Changes to 52 艮

Equipment and a resting place do not equal belonging. Recognise the insecurity honestly and avoid premature attachment.

The traveller has a place but not the proper position; possessions do not settle the heart.

LINE 5

Shoot the pheasantOne arrow is lost; honour and appointment follow · Changes to 33 遯

A measured investment demonstrates capability. A small expenditure opens access to recognition and legitimate responsibility.

Honour and appointment arrive because the traveller reaches those above.

LINE 6

The bird burns its nestFirst laughter, then lamentation; losing the ox brings misfortune · Changes to 62 小過

Arrogance destroys the only available shelter. When adaptability and receptive strength are lost, confidence turns rapidly into grief.

At the height of travelling, the nest burns; losing receptivity comes from refusing counsel.

Strategic application

Operate well without pretending temporary ground is permanent.

Work and leadership

In a new organisation or interim role, learn local rules, secure essential allies and demonstrate value before trying to redesign the whole system.

Relationships

Respect the boundaries of unfamiliar networks. Reliability earns welcome; entitlement burns the lodging.

Timing and decisions

Prefer reversible moves, light commitments and clear exit conditions until the position becomes genuinely established.

Diagnostic

Lu is constructive when mobility preserves integrity and necessary support.

Aligned expression

  • The essentials travel with you.
  • Hosts and helpers are treated well.
  • Success remains appropriately modest.
  • Temporary conditions stay visible.

Distorted expression

  • Trivial disputes consume attention.
  • Resources are mistaken for belonging.
  • Arrogance destroys support.
  • A temporary platform becomes a fantasy of permanence.

Travel lightly, preserve what matters and never burn the shelter that lets you continue.
