Hexagram 36 · 明夷 · Míng Yí

明夷Ming Yi.Darkening of the Light.

Earth covers Fire: intelligence remains present but cannot safely shine in full view. Ming Yi concerns protecting clarity, preserving correct intention and surviving conditions in which openness would expose what must endure.

䷣ Earth over FireInner clarity beneath adverse conditionsConcealment · integrity · survivalPair: 35 Jin
䷣
Do not extinguish the light merely because it must be hidden. Protect the source, preserve the direction and wait for conditions in which truth can act safely.
Core situation

Keep intelligence alive when visibility becomes dangerous.

Ming Yi means brightness injured, obscured or darkened. Fire remains inside while Earth covers it from above.

The response is neither surrender nor performative defiance. Inner understanding remains clear while outward conduct becomes yielding, discreet and difficult to target.

The central question is what must be concealed temporarily so that integrity, knowledge and future action are not destroyed.

Structural anatomy

Earth above. Fire below.

Illumination is internal; receptivity forms the outward surface. Wisdom lies in separating what must remain known from what can safely be displayed.

The judgment in four movements

Recognise danger. Dim the display. Preserve the intention. Exit when the route opens.

Darkening the light is a strategic adjustment of visibility, never permission to abandon truth.

明入地中

Accept obscured conditions

Do not demand public recognition from an environment that punishes clarity.

內文明

Keep the inner light

Understanding must remain intact even when expression is restrained.

外柔順

Soften the outer form

Yielding presentation reduces unnecessary exposure.

利艱貞

Maintain difficult correctness

Adversity tests whether concealment protects principle or compromises it.

Image principle: Light enters the Earth. When leading among many, the cultivated person uses measured obscurity while remaining inwardly clear.

Received text and interpretive layers

In adversity, preserve correctness without advertising the light.

Strategic application

Protect intelligence until conditions can receive it.

Work and leadership

Use Ming Yi in politicised or punitive environments.

  • Separate private analysis from public disclosure.
  • Protect people, evidence and future options.
  • Exit after understanding the real centre of risk.

Relationships

Not every relationship is safe enough for full transparency.

  • Do not reveal vulnerability to repeated exploitation.
  • Accept help when mobility is impaired.
  • Preserve inner truth without escalating display.

Timing and decisions

The issue is controlled visibility, not permanent hiding.

  • Lower the wings early.
  • Correct root causes without haste.
  • Wait for a safer field before shining outward.
Diagnostic

Ming Yi is constructive when concealment preserves clarity instead of eroding it.

Aligned expression

  • Risk is assessed without denial.
  • Visibility is reduced deliberately.
  • Inner standards remain intact.
  • Exit and future action remain possible.

Distorted expression

  • Defiance exposes what needed protection.
  • Concealment becomes self-erasure.
  • Survival requires moral surrender.
  • Temporary darkness is treated as permanent identity.
