乾Qian.The Creative.
Pure initiating force: six unbroken lines show power at full potential. Qian asks whether that power is correctly timed, disciplined and directed—not merely whether it exists.
When creative capacity is present—and must become responsible.
Qian represents Heaven doubled: movement that renews itself without becoming inert. In a reading, it may indicate strong initiative, leadership, ambition, authorship or the ability to set events in motion.
Yet six solid lines do not make every action timely. The line sequence begins with a hidden dragon, rises into visibility and responsibility, reaches flight, then warns against going too high. The figure therefore describes the governance of power across time.
The useful question is not “Am I powerful?” It is “What stage has this power reached, and what conduct fits that stage?”
Heaven within. Heaven without.
The inner and outer fields share the same trigram. Intention, capability and expression can align strongly—but the absence of yielding lines makes proportion and timing essential.
元亨利貞 · Begin, develop, benefit, remain correct.
The received text associates Qian with four compact qualities. Read together, they form a cycle of responsible creation rather than four unrelated promises.
Origination
Locate the true beginning. Initiate from a sound cause rather than urgency, vanity or imitation.
Development
Let the beginning pass into workable form. Momentum must circulate, coordinate and mature.
Benefit
Direct capacity toward an outcome that is useful, fitting and larger than private appetite.
Correct firmness
Sustain the course without becoming rigid. Endurance is valuable only while the direction remains right.
Image principle: Heaven’s movement is vigorous; the cultivated person responds through continuous self-strengthening. This means disciplined renewal—not restless activity for its own sake.

The governing proposition
乾：元，亨，利，貞。
Qian: originating, developing, beneficial and correctly enduring.
This establishes the complete movement of creative power: begin from the right source, develop into form, produce benefit and preserve correctness.
The scale of creative order
大哉乾元，萬物資始，乃統天。乾道變化，各正性命，保合大和，乃利貞。
Vast is Qian’s originating power: things receive their beginning through it. Through change, each finds its proper nature and great harmony is sustained.
The commentary enlarges Qian beyond personal ambition. Genuine creation establishes conditions in which many things can take their proper form.
The conduct derived from Heaven
天行健，君子以自強不息。
Heaven moves with enduring strength; the cultivated person continually strengthens and renews their capacity.
The image does not prescribe frantic productivity. It joins sustained effort to self-correction, resilience and disciplined renewal.
Four qualities as cultivated virtues
元者，善之長也；亨者，嘉之會也；利者，義之和也；貞者，事之幹也。
Origination leads goodness; development gathers excellence; benefit harmonises what is right; constancy gives affairs their supporting structure.
Qian and Kun receive this additional commentary. It is a special module for these two hexagrams—not a section that should be forced onto every page.

Do not force visibility. Build capacity, study the field and wait until conditions can carry the action. Readiness is not the same as permission to launch.

Maintain vigilance. The work is demanding and the position is not yet secure. Review motives, decisions and consequences before fatigue turns strength into error.

Experiment without pretending certainty. A larger role is possible, but timing is still fluid. Preserve the freedom to advance, pause or return.

Lead at full scale. Capacity, timing and position align. Use visibility to coordinate others and create order—not to turn recognition into self-importance.
小象傳 · 飛龍在天，大人造也。The capable person has arrived at the position where full work can be undertaken.

上九：亢龍有悔。
Descend before correction is imposed. Expansion has passed its useful limit. Share control, restore contact with reality and stop treating momentum as proof.
小象傳 · 亢龍有悔，盈不可久也。Fullness cannot be sustained indefinitely.
用九 · When all six lines change to 02 Kun: 見群龍無首，吉。 Strength works best without one dragon claiming permanent supremacy. Coordinated capability and adaptable leadership are more durable than domination.
Translate creative force into conduct.
Work and leadership
Qian favours authorship, initiative and high standards when authority is earned and the system can sustain the pace.
- Define the direction clearly.
- Match responsibility to competence.
- Build succession before power peaks.
Relationships
Strong agency can protect and inspire, but it can also crowd out response. Leadership is not permission to decide for everyone.
- Invite genuine disagreement.
- Distinguish guidance from control.
- Make room for Kun: support and receptivity.
Timing and decisions
The changing line identifies the developmental stage. The same idea may require concealment, testing, execution or deliberate retreat.
- Do not launch from line-one conditions.
- Do not hesitate in line-five conditions.
- Do not keep climbing at line six.
Qian is constructive when strength remains accountable.
Aligned expression
- Initiative is backed by preparation.
- Persistence serves a defined purpose.
- Authority creates capacity in others.
- Momentum remains open to evidence.
Distorted expression
- Action becomes compulsive or performative.
- Confidence refuses correction.
- Leadership becomes domination.
- Expansion continues past its useful limit.
