Kamo no Yasunori – The Teacher of Seimei
“A master’s skill endures through the wisdom of his students.”
The Historical Figure
Kamo no Yasunori (917–977 CE) was the leading onmyōji before Abe no Seimei. As a court professional he trained disciples, standardized procedures, and ensured that Onmyōdō operated as a dependable bureau within the Heian government. His legacy is institutional: he turned esoteric knowledge into protocols, making metaphysics usable by a state.
Metaphysical Expertise
- Onmyōdō Curriculum — Systemized yin–yang, five elements, omen reading, and geomancy into teachable modules.
- Calendar Authority — Oversaw lunisolar computations that scheduled agriculture and rites.
- Ritual Leadership — Conducted purifications and directional countermeasures for court safety.
Modern Relevance
Yasunori proves that metaphysics scales when codified. For today’s practitioner, that means clear methods, documentation, and ethical boundaries—so results are repeatable and defensible.
