Order sets the boundary. Pressure tests the response.
Direct Officer and Seven Killings are both Power or Authority relationships in BaZi. Their distinction begins with polarity—but their expression depends on placement, strength, season, support, control, timing, and real context.
Begin with the controlling relationship and polarity.
In Ten Gods logic, the element that controls the Day Master belongs to the Power or Authority category. Opposite polarity produces Direct Officer (Zheng Guan 正官); same polarity produces Seven Killings (Qi Sha 七殺), also called Indirect Officer in some translations.
The names are compact symbolic labels. They do not prove that a person obeys rules, possesses authority, behaves aggressively, works in a particular profession, or will experience a specific event.
Before interpretation, identify where the stem or branch influence appears, whether it is rooted, seasonally supported, excessive, weak, combined, controlled, transformed, or activated by timing.
Regulated authority and acute pressure.
These are useful interpretive contrasts, not fixed personality types.
Direct Officer
Often interpreted through orderly accountability, recognised standards, legitimate role, regulation, responsibility, and predictable control.
- Rules, governance, duty, procedure
- Authority with recognised boundaries
- Reputation, legitimacy, accountability
- Consistency, restraint, role clarity
- Possible shadow: rigidity, inhibition, fear of error, bureaucracy
Seven Killings
Often interpreted through concentrated pressure, challenge, urgency, competition, force, decisive response, and authority that is less comfortably regulated.
- High-pressure demands and rapid response
- Challenge, contest, risk, confrontation
- Decisiveness, courage, command under strain
- Boundary-testing and exposure to force
- Possible shadow: aggression, volatility, fear, coercion, burnout
The difference is relational—not moral.
| Dimension | Direct Officer | Seven Killings |
|---|---|---|
| Polarity | Controlling element with opposite polarity to the Day Master | Controlling element with the same polarity as the Day Master |
| Common metaphor | Regulated authority, defined duty, formal standard | Acute pressure, challenge, force, less-regulated command |
| Constructive expression | Accountability, legitimacy, consistency, responsible governance | Courage, decisive response, resilience, action under pressure |
| Strained expression | Rigidity, excessive caution, compliance anxiety, bureaucracy | Conflict, coercion, impulsive force, overwork, chronic threat |
| Workplace hypothesis | Preference for clear standards, roles, accountability, and stable authority | Possible effectiveness in challenge, crisis, competition, or rapid action |
| What it cannot prove | Integrity, competence, obedience, leadership, or professional qualification | Courage, aggression, danger, misconduct, or crisis competence |
Never interpret Power in isolation.
Can pressure be carried?
Strength is not a simple personality score. Assess season, roots, support, drainage, control, and the whole chart.
Can pressure be processed?
Resource may be interpreted as support, learning, legitimacy, recovery, or a pathway that mediates Power.
Can pressure be answered?
Output may regulate, challenge, express, or redirect Power—but the relationship is conditional, not automatically beneficial.
What feeds the pressure?
Wealth generates Power in the Five Phase cycle; its placement and condition can change demand, responsibility, and consequence.
Is the function altered?
Stem combinations, branch interactions, rooting, void, and transformation claims require complete-chart analysis.
What is activated now?
Luck Pillars and annual influences may increase visibility of a function; they do not dictate a universal strategy or event.
Turn symbolism into observable management questions.
Are standards clear?
Test whether defined authority, consistent rules, role clarity, and documented accountability improve actual performance.
How is pressure handled?
Observe decisions, communication, safety, recovery, and judgment during real—but responsibly bounded—challenge.
Can order contain intensity?
Explore whether formal structure helps channel urgent action without suppressing necessary speed or escalating force.
Do not use Ten Gods to hire, promote, dismiss, diagnose, or rank people. Use job-relevant evidence, structured assessment, documented performance, consent, and lawful process.
Locate. Assess. Relate. Test.
This hierarchy prevents a dramatic label from overriding the chart and the person’s lived evidence.
Confirm the Day Master
Use correct birth data, time convention, and chart calculation.
Identify Power
Derive Direct Officer and Seven Killings by element and polarity.
Locate expression
Note pillar, stem or branch, hidden stem, roots, and visibility.
Assess condition
Read season, capacity, support, drainage, control, and interactions.
Add timing
Examine incoming cycles as interaction—not predetermined outcome.
Verify in context
Compare hypotheses with behaviour, role, environment, and evidence.
Authority symbols are not authority credentials.
BaZi is a traditional interpretive system. It does not replace psychological assessment, employment evidence, legal authority, clinical evaluation, or professional qualification.
