Heavenly Virtue.Resolution through principled process.
Heavenly Virtue (天德) is derived from the birth Month Branch and mapped to one specific stem or branch. Traditionally associated with mitigation and orderly resolution, it describes a possible channel—not immunity from consequence.
Mitigation is not the same as exemption.
Traditional interpretation associates Tian De with moral conduct, mediation, reduced friction and the possibility that a difficult matter becomes manageable through appropriate procedure or principled assistance.
Its practical expression may be modest: the correct reviewer notices a compliant route, a dispute returns to evidence, an authority grants fair consideration, or preparation prevents a problem from escalating.
The URL retains the older “yearly-virtue” wording, but this formula is not derived from the Year Branch. It begins from the birth Month Branch. Keeping that distinction visible prevents it from being confused with annual Grand Duke markers or Monthly Virtue (月德).
One month key. One matching target.

Presence rule: for the birth Month Branch, find the mapped target. Heavenly Virtue is present when that exact target appears in the appropriate stem or branch layer of the four pillars.
Do not confuse lunar month numbers with BaZi months.
Build the solar chart
Use solar terms to establish the Month Pillar accurately.
Read the Month Branch
Use the Earthly Branch beneath the Month Stem.
Find the target
Note whether the table gives a stem or a branch.
Scan the correct layer
Look for that character in the four natal pillars, then read placement.
Where the target appears shapes the domain.
Public and inherited field
Goodwill, institutional context, elders, networks or reputation repair.
Work and procedure
Organisations, managers, formal systems and administrative resolution.
Personal conduct
Close relationships, private choices and integrity felt directly.
Execution and future
Projects, specialists, operational fixes and later-emerging assistance.
Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue are the Two Virtues—not the same formula.
A mixed stem-or-branch target
Uses the birth Month Branch to produce one specific target. Depending on the month, the target may be a Heavenly Stem or Earthly Branch.
- Twelve-entry lookup
- Scan the appropriate chart layer
- Associated with principled mitigation
A Heavenly Stem target
Uses the Month Branch’s three-harmony grouping to map to a Virtue Stem. It is related to Tian De but must be calculated separately.
- Four seasonal groupings
- Search the visible stems
- Often interpreted alongside Tian De
A chart born in a You month.
Calculation establishes the marker. It does not establish the outcome.
From formula to bounded interpretation
Virtue supports process. It does not suspend reality.
No guaranteed protection
The marker does not cancel risk, negligence or consequences.
No Year-Branch derivation
Despite the legacy URL, the table begins from the Month Branch.
No lunar-month shortcut
Confirm the solar-term Month Pillar rather than assuming a lunar month number.
No single-star verdict
Read chart structure, interactions, placement and timing first.
No passive reliance
Documentation, qualifications and ethical conduct remain necessary.
No medical or legal promise
Use qualified expertise for health, law, finance and safety.
The cleanest expression of Heavenly Virtue is not luck without effort. It is difficulty met by conduct strong enough to support resolution.

Keep the formula precise.
Is Heavenly Virtue really a yearly star?
Not under the formula used here. It is calculated from the birth Month Branch. The existing URL is retained for continuity, but the page title and explanation use the more precise name Heavenly Virtue.
Why are some targets stems and others branches?
That is part of this traditional twelve-month mapping. Match a stem target only against stems and a branch target only against branches.
Is Heavenly Virtue the same as Monthly Virtue?
No. Both use the Month Branch and are often called the Two Virtues, but their lookup rules differ.
What if the target is absent from the natal chart?
It may appear temporarily through a Luck Pillar or shorter timing layer. Treat that as a hypothesis to test, not automatic protection.
Which placement is best?
No placement is universally best. It indicates a domain; structural usefulness and the complete chart determine relevance.
