比Bi.Holding Together.

People gather around what is trustworthy, enduring and clear. Bi examines alliance, belonging and the responsibility of becoming a centre others can safely join.

䷇ Water over Earth One centre among the receptive Alliance · trust · commitment Pair: 07 Shi
䷇
Belonging becomes durable when people join from sincerity, the centre deserves trust and commitment arrives before opportunity closes.
Core situation

When the real question is what—and whom—you should join.

Bi places Water above Earth. Water gathers naturally across the receptive ground, while one firm fifth line provides a visible centre.

Union is not automatically good. The text asks whether the bond begins in sincerity, preserves self-respect and forms around a worthy centre.

The useful question is not “How do I belong?” It is “What shared purpose deserves commitment, and what must I embody for others to trust the alliance?”

Structural anatomy

Earth within. Water without.

Inner receptivity supports outward connection. A credible centre gives scattered people a reason to gather without coercion.

The judgment in four movements

Examine the centre. Make commitment durable. Welcome sincere support. Do not arrive too late.

Bi treats alliance as a mutual test: the group must be worth joining, and the person joining must bring sincerity rather than dependency.

YUAN SHI

Examine the foundation

Reconsider the alliance at its source: who holds the centre, what binds the group and whether the bond is trustworthy.

Be great, enduring and correct

A centre attracts durable support through sustained character, not charisma that disappears under pressure.

Offer a trustworthy place

Those without security gather when the alliance provides genuine steadiness, reciprocity and direction.

Commit in time

Endless hesitation can leave a person outside the relationship after its terms and trust have already formed.

Image principle: Water rests upon Earth; the ancient kings established many states and cultivated close relations among their leaders.

Received text and interpretive layers

Union begins with the quality of the centre.

Hexagram statement

The governing proposition

Bi: good fortune. Examine the foundation again: if it is great, enduring and correct, there is no blame. The unsettled come; the latecomer meets misfortune.

The statement combines openness with a deadline: worthy union welcomes support but cannot remain permanently undefined.

Commentary on the Judgment

Support follows a firm and central presence

Bi is favourable; it means mutual support, with those below responding. Great, enduring correctness is without blame because firmness occupies the centre.

The commentary makes cohesion an effect of trustworthy centrality rather than pressure to conform.

The Great Image

Build connection across difference

Water upon Earth forms Bi. The ancient kings established the many states and maintained close relations with their leaders.

Durable networks combine local identity with active relationship to a wider centre.

Six changing-line positions

Six tests of belonging.

The lines move from simple sincerity through inward commitment, unsuitable association, worthy outward alliance, open leadership and union attempted without a true beginning.

LINE 1

Fill the simple vessel with sincerityTrust before status · Changes to 03 屯

Begin without performance. Plain, full sincerity creates a bond that can attract further good beyond the original connection.

Sincere union at the beginning opens into additional good.

LINE 2

Join from withinDo not abandon yourself · Changes to 29 坎

Let commitment arise from inner agreement. Belonging is favourable when it does not require self-betrayal.

Union arising from within does not lose what is proper to oneself.

LINE 3

Do not join the wrong peopleDiscern association · Changes to 39 蹇

Need does not make every alliance suitable. Association with people who violate the bond’s purpose produces injury rather than support.

Union with unsuitable people cannot avoid harm.

LINE 4

Join worth beyond yourselfChoose the worthy · Changes to 45 萃

Extend commitment toward a worthy centre. Outward alliance is favourable when it remains principled rather than opportunistic.

Outward union with the worthy follows what is higher.

LINE 5

Make belonging visible and freeOpen leadership · Changes to 02 坤

Do not trap people into loyalty. A worthy centre makes its terms visible and allows those who do not belong to leave freely.

Visible union is favourable because the centre is correct and does not pursue those who turn away.

LINE 6

Union without a beginningLate and leaderless · Changes to 20 觀

A bond cannot be repaired by pretending it began well. Without a head, origin or guiding principle, there is no sound completion.

Union without a beginning has nowhere soundly to end.

Strategic application

  • Charisma substitutes for dependable character.
  • Commitment stays vague until the opportunity disappears.
