Hexagram 07 · 師 · Shī

師Shi.The Army.

Collective force becomes legitimate only when purpose, discipline and command are correct. Shi is about organising people under pressure without surrendering moral responsibility.

䷆ Earth over Water Force held within the people Discipline · command · stewardship Pair: 08 Bi
䷆
A group becomes a true force only when authority is legitimate, discipline is consistent and the burden of command is carried responsibly.
Core situation

When many people must move as one without becoming a mob.

Shi places Earth above Water. Water gathered beneath the ground suggests latent collective power held inside a broad social field.

The figure is not a celebration of warfare. It examines mobilisation: who may command, what rules govern action and how force returns to order.

The useful question is not “How much power can we deploy?” It is “What purpose, discipline and leadership make collective action worthy of support?”

Structural anatomy

Water within. Earth without.

Danger and resolve are contained within receptivity. Collective strength must be organised, provisioned and governed before it is released.

The judgment in four movements

Correct the purpose. Choose experienced command. Establish discipline. Protect the people.

Shi makes organised power conditional. Numbers alone do not confer legitimacy; correctness and mature leadership do.

貞 · ZHEN

Make the cause correct

Collective action requires a defensible purpose, clear limits and rules that remain binding under pressure.

ZHANG REN

Entrust mature command

Leadership belongs to the person with experience, credibility and the steadiness to carry consequence.

以律 · YI LÜ

Move by discipline

Shared standards, logistics and accountability must precede deployment; enthusiasm cannot replace order.

Carry responsibility through

Good fortune without blame depends on protecting the collective before, during and after mobilisation.

Image principle: Water rests within Earth; the cultivated person accommodates the people and nourishes the multitude before asking it to act.

Received text and interpretive layers

Power becomes legitimate through correctness and mature command.

Hexagram statement

The governing proposition

Shi: correctness. With a mature and experienced leader, there is good fortune and no blame.

The statement makes leadership quality and moral purpose inseparable from the use of collective force.

Commentary on the Judgment

Correctness organises the multitude

Shi denotes the multitude; correctness means making the multitude right. Firmness occupies the centre, receives response and moves through danger with compliance.

The commentary locates authority in central responsibility, not in force for its own sake.

The Great Image

Nourish before mobilising

Water within Earth forms Shi. The cultivated person accommodates the people and nourishes the multitude.

Capacity is built through inclusion, provision and trust long before coordinated action is required.

Six changing-line positions

Six tests of collective command.

The lines move from initial discipline through central leadership, failed delegation, strategic withdrawal, divided command and the final allocation of responsibility.

LINE 1

Go forth under disciplineRules before movement · Changes to 19 臨

Establish order before mobilisation. A collective that moves without sound rules creates danger regardless of enthusiasm.

When discipline is lost, mobilisation becomes ominous.

LINE 2

Lead from the centreEarn trust and mandate · Changes to 02 坤

Remain inside the work. Legitimate command is present, responsive and repeatedly entrusted because it holds the centre.

Central command receives trust and holds the wider field in mind.

LINE 3

Do not let the army carry corpsesFailed command · Changes to 46 升

Do not allow confused authority to produce avoidable loss. When unqualified people direct operations, the collective carries the consequences.

Carrying the dead signifies that no great achievement has been secured.

LINE 4

Encamp to the leftStrategic withdrawal · Changes to 40 解

Do not force an unfavourable position. An orderly pause or withdrawal preserves the force for conditions it can actually meet.

Withdrawing in order does not abandon the proper course.

LINE 5

Game is in the fieldOne command, not divided command · Changes to 29 坎

Respond to a real threat under qualified leadership. Divided authority turns even a justified operation into loss.

The mature leader acts from the centre; improper delegation brings failure.

LINE 6

Allocate merit after the campaignKeep petty people from power · Changes to 04 蒙

Consolidate order carefully. Reward real contribution, establish accountable stewardship and do not hand authority to those who would corrupt the peace.

Merit must be correctly recognised; unfit appointments create disorder.

Strategic application

Build disciplined coordination before testing collective strength.

Work and leadership

Translate purpose into clear authority, standards, logistics and accountability.

  • Name one accountable commander.
  • Equip people before demanding performance.
  • Preserve a disciplined exit plan.

Teams and communities

Belonging must be supported by fair rules and competent coordination.

  • Build trust before crisis.
  • Do not confuse loyalty with obedience.
  • Protect dissent that improves the mission.

Timing and decisions

Mobilise only when the need is real, the objective bounded and the leadership fit for consequence.

  • Distinguish threat from excitement.
  • Withdraw when conditions invalidate the plan.
  • Plan demobilisation before deployment.
Diagnostic

Shi is constructive when collective power remains accountable to its purpose.

Aligned expression

  • The objective is legitimate and bounded.
  • Authority and responsibility remain aligned.
  • People are trained and provisioned.
  • Withdrawal is treated as a strategic option.

Distorted expression

  • Urgency excuses poor discipline.
  • Command is divided among competing egos.
  • People absorb risks leaders will not carry.
  • Victory is pursued without a plan for order afterward.
