Hexagram 28 · 大過 · Dà Guò

大過Da Guo.Great Exceeding.

Lake rises above Wood: an exceptional load bears upon a structure whose ends are weak. Da Guo concerns crisis-scale responsibility—reinforcing what can still hold and acting beyond ordinary measures without abandoning judgment.

䷛
When the load exceeds the ordinary, ordinary responses are no longer enough. Strengthen the structure, then act with uncommon clarity.
Core situation

Carry what must be carried without pretending the structure is stronger than it is.

Da Guo means a great excess or an exceptional crossing. Four strong inner lines press against weak lines at the base and summit, creating the image of a ridgepole that bends under too much weight.

The hexagram does not recommend drama or reckless heroism. It calls for an accurate reading of structural weakness, reinforcement at the right points and independent action when convention cannot meet the moment.

The opportunity is real: when strength remains centred and responsive, extraordinary conditions can produce an extraordinary but responsible passage.

Structural anatomy

Lake above. Wind and Wood below.

Water submerges the tree. The centre is powerful, but the ends are yielding: the issue is not lack of force, but whether the whole structure can bear it.

The judgment in four movements

Name the strain. Reinforce the structure. Depart from routine. Cross decisively.

Great Exceeding becomes constructive when exceptional action answers an exceptional condition—not appetite, vanity or impatience.

See where the ridgepole bends

Locate the load-bearing weakness before adding more force.

Strengthen the ends

A powerful centre cannot compensate indefinitely for a weak foundation or finish.

Keep strength centred

Excess can serve the moment only when it remains proportionate and responsive.

Move beyond the ordinary

Once the structure is understood, purposeful movement brings passage.

Image principle: Lake submerges Wood. The cultivated person stands alone without fear and can withdraw from the world without bitterness.

Received text and interpretive layers

Extraordinary pressure requires extraordinary integrity.

Hexagram statement

The governing proposition

Great Exceeding. The ridgepole bends. It is beneficial to have somewhere to go. Success.

The situation is overloaded, yet purposeful movement remains possible.

Commentary on the Judgment

Greatness has passed beyond measure

The great exceeds; the ridgepole bends because root and end are weak. Strength remains centred, and responsive joy makes movement possible.

The time of Great Exceeding is itself great: it demands more than ordinary procedure.

The Great Image

Stand independently

Lake submerges Wood: Great Exceeding. The cultivated person stands alone without fear and withdraws from the world without distress.

Independence here is steadiness under pressure, not theatrical isolation.

Six changing-line positions

Six responses to extraordinary load.

The lines move from careful preparation through renewal, structural danger and support, then toward the risks of short-lived display and overreaching sacrifice.

LINE 1

Use white rushes beneath itExceptional care at the foundation · Changes to 43 夬

Prepare the base with unusual care. In an overloaded situation, humility and redundancy are not excessive; they prevent blame.

White rushes are used because yielding care occupies the lowest place.

LINE 2

The dry poplar sproutsComplementarity renews what seemed spent · Changes to 31 咸

An unlikely but fitting alliance restores life. Difference can become regenerative when each side supplies what the other lacks.

The older man and younger wife join through a complementarity that exceeds the ordinary.

LINE 3

The ridgepole sagsUnsupported overload leads to failure · Changes to 47 困

Strength becomes dangerous when it refuses support. More force cannot rescue a structure already bending at its critical point.

The misfortune of the sagging ridgepole is that support cannot be made effective.

LINE 4

The ridgepole is raisedRestore support without hidden entanglement · Changes to 48 井

Correct reinforcement brings good fortune. Secondary motives or compromised alliances weaken the repair and create regret.

The raised ridgepole is fortunate because it does not bend downward.

LINE 5

The dry poplar flowersDisplay may revive appearance, not duration · Changes to 32 恆

A dramatic flowering can conceal exhaustion. It is neither blameworthy nor praiseworthy, but it cannot be mistaken for durable renewal.

How could the flowering of a dry poplar last?

LINE 6

Crossing until the head is submergedCourage reaches beyond survivable limits · Changes to 44 姤

The commitment may be sincere, yet the passage exceeds capacity. Misfortune follows, although the motive does not deserve blame.

The misfortune of crossing too far cannot be blamed.

Strategic application

Use exceptional measures only for exceptional conditions.

Work and leadership

Da Guo appears when responsibility, scale or urgency exceeds the current design.

  • Identify the true load-bearing points.
  • Add support before adding ambition.
  • Empower decisive action without glamorising overwork.

Relationships

One person may be carrying more than the bond can safely hold.

  • Name unequal weight plainly.
  • Accept help that genuinely complements.
  • Do not confuse sacrifice with sustainable devotion.

Timing and decisions

The moment permits departure from routine, but not departure from evidence.

  • Distinguish crisis from impatience.
  • Reinforce the weak ends first.
  • Choose a destination before making the crossing.
Diagnostic

Da Guo is constructive when unusual strength serves a real structural need.

Aligned expression

  • The exceptional load is named accurately.
  • Weak foundations and endpoints receive support.
  • Independent action remains answerable to consequence.
  • The response ends when the emergency ends.

Distorted expression

  • Crisis becomes an identity or performance.
  • More force is added to an already bending system.
  • Short-lived display is mistaken for renewal.
  • Self-sacrifice crosses beyond useful capacity.
