坎Kan.The Abysmal.
Water flows over Water: danger is repeated, not singular. Kan teaches how inner truth, trained conduct and continuous movement carry us through uncertainty without allowing fear to govern the route.
Build the capacity to meet danger more than once.
Kan is doubled Water: one abyss follows another. It describes recurring uncertainty, deep emotional pressure, hazardous work and any passage where the route cannot be made completely safe.
The solid centre within each Water trigram represents an inner reliability that survives difficult surroundings. The task is to remain sincere, responsive and mobile rather than becoming reckless, frozen or fascinated by danger.
Repeated difficulty can become disciplined competence. The question is not whether danger exists, but whether your conduct remains dependable inside it.
Water above. Water below.
A firm line moves between yielding banks in both trigrams. Water does not abandon its nature: it fills each hollow, finds the available path and continues.
Recognise repetition. Keep faith. Train conduct. Continue moving.
Kan does not promise the removal of danger. It develops the character and method needed to cross danger without losing the centre.
Study repeated danger
Look for the recurring terrain and learn what each repetition is teaching.
Keep inner truth
Reliability begins with a centre that does not change its principles under pressure.
Keep the heart open
Fear narrows perception; centred sincerity preserves intelligent response.
Continue with method
Movement earns value when it follows the real channel rather than forcing escape.
Image principle: Water arrives repeatedly. The cultivated person maintains constant virtue and practises the work of instruction.
Reliability is what makes passage possible.
The governing proposition
Repeated Water. There is sincerity. The heart can pass through; action has value.
The danger repeats, but so can disciplined and trustworthy response.
Move through danger without losing truth
Repeated Kan is danger doubled. Water flows without overflowing and travels through danger without losing its reliability.
Firmness at the centre gives the heart passage; purposeful movement produces work of value.
Make reliability habitual
Water arrives repeatedly: Repeated Kan. The cultivated person maintains constant virtue and practises instruction.
What survives recurring danger is not improvisation alone, but character and method rehearsed until dependable.
Six positions within danger.
The lines distinguish falling into the pit, gaining small footholds, repeating a failed approach, using simple sincerity, allowing danger to level out and becoming bound by persistent error.
Entering the pit within the pitRepetition without learning loses the way · Changes to 60 節
Danger deepens when a familiar mistake is repeated automatically. Stop treating recurrence as fate and examine the path that keeps leading downward.
Entering the pit in repeated danger is unfortunate because the way has been lost.
Seek a small gain within dangerSecure the next foothold, not total escape · Changes to 08 比
Do not demand a complete solution from the middle of the abyss. A limited, real advance is more valuable than a grand move without footing.
Only a small gain is sought because one has not yet left the danger.
Danger coming and goingDo not act from a position with no safe direction · Changes to 48 井
Both advance and retreat return to danger. Pause rather than converting entrapment into compulsive action.
Coming and going through danger ultimately accomplishes nothing.
A simple offering through the windowDirect sincerity crosses formal barriers · Changes to 47 困
In constrained conditions, simple and honest communication is enough. Substance matters more than ceremony when trust must cross a narrow opening.
The simple offering marks the meeting of firm and yielding.
The abyss is not yet fullLet the level rise only to what is needed · Changes to 07 師
Danger is managed by levelling, not by seeking excess. Restore workable balance and do not turn survival into triumphal display.
The abyss is not filled because the centre has not yet become great.
Bound within thorn barriersPersistent loss of the way hardens into confinement · Changes to 59 渙
When repeated warning produces no correction, danger becomes captivity. Release begins with recovering the way, not struggling harder against the bonds.
The top line has lost the way; misfortune endures for three years.
Train for recurrence instead of depending on rescue.
