Hexagram 43 · 夬 · Guài

夬Guai.Breakthrough.

Lake rises above Heaven: pressure reaches the point of declaration. Guai concerns decisive removal, public clarity and confronting a persistent problem without allowing determination to collapse into aggression.

Breakthrough requires a clear declaration, awareness of danger and restraint in the use of force.
Core situation

Make the problem visible, then remove it without becoming it.

Guai means deciding, breaking through or resolutely separating. A single yielding line remains above five firm lines: the issue is exposed, yet its position still demands care.

The Judgment calls for public announcement and honest warning while explicitly rejecting a premature resort to arms.

Structural anatomy

Lake above. Heaven below.

Creative force rises until the Lake can no longer contain it. Resolution must release pressure through truth and proportion.

Strategic application

Make the decision clear enough to act, but disciplined enough not to become aggression.

Work and leadership

Name the persistent problem publicly, establish support and act within legitimate authority.

Relationships

State the boundary clearly. Do not use righteous certainty to avoid proportion or dialogue.

Timing and decisions

Move when evidence, capacity and destination align—not merely when frustration peaks.

Diagnostic

Guai is constructive when clarity removes corruption without multiplying conflict.

Aligned expression

  • The issue is named openly.
  • Danger is acknowledged.
  • Action has a clear destination.
  • Force remains proportionate.

Distorted expression

  • Certainty outruns capacity.
  • Declaration becomes humiliation.
  • Advice is ignored.
  • Conflict becomes the objective.

Declare clearly. Decide proportionately. Remove the fault without worshipping force.
