Thunder moves above Lake: desire produces movement before position, authority and long-term terms are properly settled. Gui Mei examines unequal roles, constrained agency and the consequences of entering an arrangement from the wrong place.
Do not confuse entry with belonging.
Gui Mei uses an ancient marriage image to examine participation from a secondary or structurally unequal position. Its concern is not marriage alone, but any arrangement entered through desire while status and terms remain misaligned.
The warning is severe because forward action cannot correct a defective foundation. First understand the role, the power distribution and the likely ending.

Lake supplies attraction and pleasure; Thunder turns that impulse into movement. The sequence becomes dangerous when feeling initiates action before position is correct.

歸妹，天地之大義也。天地不交，而萬物不興，歸妹人之終始也。說以動，所歸妹也。征凶，位不當也。無攸利，柔乘剛也。

Delay is preferable to entering on defective terms. Waiting protects the possibility of a more suitable alignment.

True rank does not require ornamental proof. Centrality, dignity and restrained fullness carry more authority than appearance.

An empty basket and bloodless sacrificeNo advantage · Changes to 38 睽
上六：女承筐無實，士刲羊無血，無攸利。
The form remains while substance is absent. Ceremony, title or agreement cannot make an empty exchange real.
小象傳 · 上六無實，承虛筐也. There is no substance because an empty basket is being carried.

Work and leadership
Clarify mandate, decision rights, compensation and succession before accepting a prestigious title with secondary authority.
Relationships
Attraction does not settle reciprocity. Name the commitment, asymmetry and future each person is actually accepting.
Timing and decisions
Project forward to the ending. If present terms cannot mature well, more movement only deepens the defect.
Gui Mei becomes useful when unequal conditions are seen without self-deception.
