漸Jian.Development.
Wind moves through Wood above Mountain: growth takes root, adapts and advances by stages. Jian is not delay for its own sake. It is durable progress built through sequence, correct position and patient integration.
Progress succeeds when each stage prepares the next.
Jian means gradual advance. Its recurring image is the wild goose moving from the water’s edge toward increasingly stable and elevated ground.
The hexagram does not recommend passivity. It asks whether growth is properly rooted, socially recognised and structurally ready before expansion continues.
Wind and Wood above. Mountain below.
Mountain supplies restraint and foundation; Wind supplies penetration and organic extension. Development lasts when movement grows from stability.
Advance gradually, correctly and into real position.
The governing proposition
漸：女歸吉，利貞。
Development: the young woman marries with good fortune. Constancy is beneficial.
Progress gains position
漸之進也，女歸吉也。進得位，往有功也。進以正，可以正邦也。其位剛，得中也。止而巽，動不窮也。
Gradual advance gains the proper place and therefore achieves results. Rooted in stillness and expressed through gentle penetration, movement does not exhaust itself.
Virtue changes the surrounding culture
山上有木，漸；君子以居賢德，善俗。
On the mountain is a tree: Development. The cultivated person dwells in worthy virtue and improves customs.

At the water’s edgeThe young are endangered; there is talk, but no blame · Changes to 37 家人
初六：鴻漸于干，小子厲，有言，無咎。
The beginning is exposed and easily criticised. Move carefully without treating early vulnerability as failure.
小象傳 · 小子之厲，義無咎也. The danger to the young is not blameworthy in principle.
On the great rockEating and drinking in ease; good fortune · Changes to 57 巽
六二：鴻漸于磐，飲食衎衎，吉。
A dependable foothold permits nourishment and ease. Stability here has been earned, not borrowed.
小象傳 · 飲食衎衎，吉，不素飽也. Joyful nourishment is auspicious because it is not unearned.
On the dry landDeparture does not return; disorder brings misfortune · Changes to 20 觀
九三：鴻漸于陸，夫征不復，婦孕不育，凶；利禦寇。
Advance outruns relationship and continuity. Consolidate the group and defend what has already been established.
小象傳 · 夫征不復，離群醜也。婦孕不育，失其道也。利用御寇，順相保也. Separation loses the way; coordinated defence preserves the group.

The new environment is imperfect, but an adaptable landing is available. Use the workable support rather than demanding ideal conditions.

九五：鴻漸于陵，婦三歲不孕，終莫之勝，吉。
Delay does not cancel a sound development. When the position is correct, obstruction eventually loses its power.
小象傳 · 終莫之勝，吉；得所願也. In the end it cannot be overcome; the intended result is attained.

上九：鴻漸于陸，其羽可用為儀，吉。
Development becomes an example others can follow. Mature conduct carries symbolic authority beyond personal achievement.
小象傳 · 其羽可用為儀，吉；不可亂也. Its feathers serve as a standard because the pattern cannot be disordered.
Build continuity, not merely momentum.
Work and leadership
Sequence capability, authority and scale. Do not promote the appearance of maturity ahead of the operating system beneath it.
Relationships
Let trust acquire history. Durable commitment grows through repeated evidence, appropriate transitions and shared customs.
Timing and decisions
Ask what the present stage must establish before the next move becomes safe, credible and useful.
Jian is aligned when each advance creates a more stable platform.

- Caution becomes indefinite delay.
