Dispersion is not merely things falling apart. It can be the deliberate release of what prevents a larger unity.
Core situation

Dissolve the blockage, then gather around what matters.

Huan describes separation, diffusion and the breaking apart of hardened boundaries. Wind crosses Water and moves what had become fixed, fearful or isolated.

Yet scattering alone does not create renewal. The ancestral temple symbolises a centre of meaning strong enough to gather dispersed loyalties. Release must serve reconnection, correct purpose and a real crossing.

Structural anatomy

Wind above. Water below.

Wind stirs the surface of Water, breaking rigid concentration into movement. Wood over Water also suggests a vessel capable of crossing danger.

Hexagram statement

The governing proposition

Dispersion brings success. The king approaches the temple. It is beneficial to cross the great river; constancy is beneficial.

Commentary on the Judgment

A centre makes passage possible

Strength arrives without exhaustion and the yielding gains its outer place. The king stands at the centre; riding Wood over Water makes the great crossing effective.

The Great Image

Establish the centre of belonging

Wind travels over Water: Dispersion. The ancient kings made offerings to the divine and established temples.

Six changing-line positions

Six ways to release fragmentation.

LINE 1

Rescue with a strong horseGood fortune · Changes to 61 中孚

Act before separation becomes severe. Early assistance can still restore movement quickly and cleanly.

The first line’s good fortune comes from following the workable course.

LINE 2

Run toward the supportRegret disappears · Changes to 20 觀

When the field disperses, move toward dependable support. Finding a stable point prevents isolation from becoming collapse.

Running to the support fulfils the need of the moment.

LINE 3

Disperse the selfNo regret · Changes to 57 巽

Release private fixation in service of the larger situation. The self is not destroyed; its narrow claim is loosened.

The self is dispersed because the intention reaches beyond itself.

LINE 4

Disperse the factionGreat good fortune; a mound emerges beyond ordinary thought · Changes to 6 訟

Break smaller factions so a larger community can form. Releasing partisan loyalty creates a gathering no narrow group could imagine.

LINE 5

Great commands disperse like sweatThe king’s residence is dispersed; no blame · Changes to 4 蒙

The king’s position is without blame because it is correctly centred.

LINE 6

Disperse the blood and depart far awayNo blame · Changes to 29 坎

Remove yourself from the field of injury. At the end of dispersion, distance from harm is the correct release.

Dispersing the blood means moving far from harm.

Strategic application

Break the barriers that prevent circulation—then restore a meaningful centre.

Work and leadership

Dissolve silos, release trapped information and distribute resources, while restating the purpose that keeps decentralisation coherent.

Relationships

Loosen defensiveness and fixed identity without forcing intimacy. Shared meaning can gather people after emotional ice begins to melt.

Timing and decisions

Act early against fragmentation. Use strong support, common purpose and a practical vessel before attempting the difficult crossing.

Diagnostic

Huan is aligned when release restores movement and wider belonging.

Aligned expression

  • Obstruction is released early.
  • Private fixation yields to common purpose.
  • Resources circulate from the centre.
  • Distance is used when it prevents harm.

Distorted expression

  • Dispersion becomes aimless fragmentation.
  • The centre hoards while the edges weaken.
  • Factions replace shared purpose.
  • Release occurs without a means to regroup.

Dissolve what isolates the parts, then let shared purpose gather them at a deeper centre.
