節Jie.Limitation.

Water rests above Lake: flow gains usefulness through measure, proportion and a vessel able to contain it. Jie concerns boundaries that preserve resources and movement—without becoming so bitter that life can no longer circulate.

䷻ Water over LakeMeasure the flow; preserve the systemBoundaries · proportion · sustainabilityPair: 59 Huan
䷻
A useful limit protects circulation. A bitter limit destroys the system it was meant to preserve.
Core situation

Give movement a form it can sustain.

Jie is often translated as Limitation, Regulation or Articulation. Its central concern is not denial for its own sake. A lake exists because it has banks; a calendar works because time is divided; resources remain available because their use is measured.

The warning is equally important: limits must remain proportionate and intelligible. Rules that become punitive, joyless or impossible to maintain exhaust the very people and resources they are supposed to protect.

Structural anatomy

Water above. Lake below.

Water requires containment, while Lake provides a bounded basin and open exchange. Together they describe flow governed by measure rather than blocked by severity.

Regulation succeeds when it remains humane.

Hexagram statement

The governing proposition

Limitation brings success. Bitter limitation must not be persisted in.

Commentary on the Judgment

Measure creates order without injury

Firm and yielding are distinguished, and firmness gains the centre. Joy moves through danger; correct limitation permits passage. Heaven and Earth are measured and the seasons form. Institutions regulate without injuring wealth or harming the people.

The Great Image

Define standards and examine conduct

Water above the Lake: Limitation. The noble one establishes number and measure, and deliberates upon virtue and conduct.

Six changing-line positions

Six ways to set—or misuse—a boundary.

LINE 1

Do not leave the courtyardNo blame · Changes to 29 坎

Restraint is correct while the passage is closed. Staying within the threshold is intelligent timing, not fear.

Not leaving the courtyard means knowing when passage is open or blocked.

LINE 2

Do not remain inside the gateMisfortune · Changes to 3 屯

A limit becomes failure when it survives after the opening appears. Excess caution misses the moment that requires movement.

Not leaving the gate means losing the moment completely.

LINE 3

Without limitation, lament followsNo blame beyond oneself · Changes to 5 需

Unmeasured appetite produces its own regret. The consequence is corrective feedback; responsibility cannot be outsourced.

Who else can be blamed for the lament that follows lack of restraint?

LINE 4

Peaceful limitationSuccess · Changes to 58 兌

The best boundary feels settled rather than forced. It supports the larger order and therefore requires little friction to maintain.

Peaceful limitation succeeds because it follows the higher way.

LINE 5

Sweet limitationGood fortune; going brings esteem · Changes to 19 臨

Good regulation is fair, comprehensible and willingly upheld. Because the centre practises what it asks of others, measured action earns respect.

Sweet limitation is auspicious because it occupies the central position.

LINE 6

Bitter limitationPersistence brings misfortune; regret disappears · Changes to 61 中孚

Severity has reached the point of exhaustion. Stop treating harshness as virtue; acknowledge the limit of limitation and correct the system.

Persisting in bitter limitation is unfortunate because its way has reached an end.

Strategic application

Use boundaries to protect capacity, not to display control.

Work and leadership

Set budgets, scope, decision rights and operating thresholds that protect throughput. Remove rules whose maintenance costs more than the risk they control.

Relationships

Make boundaries mutual, explicit and livable. A healthy limit preserves respect and connection; a punitive limit turns distance into domination.

Timing and decisions

Distinguish a genuinely closed passage from an opening you are afraid to use. Restraint and action can both be correct—but not at the same moment.

Diagnostic

Jie is aligned when limits preserve energy, fairness and future movement.

Aligned expression

  • Rules are proportionate to real risks.
  • Resources remain available for what matters.
  • Boundaries are clear and mutually understood.
  • Restraint ends when the correct opening appears.

Distorted expression

  • Restriction becomes an identity or moral performance.
  • Rules remain after their purpose has expired.
  • Those at the centre demand sacrifices they do not share.
  • Fear disguises itself as discipline.

Set limits that protect life, resources and movement—never limits so bitter that the system cannot endure.
