蹇Jian.Obstruction.

Water gathers above Mountain: danger lies ahead while stillness prevents blind advance. Jian concerns intelligent stopping, reorientation, self-examination and finding the people or terrain through which movement becomes possible again.

䷦
An obstacle is not always asking for more force. It may be directing you toward another route, another scale of action or another source of help.
Core situation

Stop before danger, then redesign the route.

Jian means difficulty, lameness or impeded movement. Mountain below recognises the need to stop; Water above presents the dangerous terrain.

The Judgment contrasts the easier southwest with the exhausted northeast and recommends meeting a great person. Obstruction is not solved in isolation when wiser coordination is available.

The central question is whether persistence serves the objective—or merely protects attachment to the original route.

Structural anatomy

Water above. Mountain below.

Danger stands before stillness. Wisdom appears in the ability to halt, turn inward and seek a passage that the current approach cannot provide.

The judgment in four movements

See the danger. Stop intelligently. Turn toward support. Correct the approach.

The obstacle becomes useful when it interrupts automatic movement and redirects attention toward position, character and coordination.

見險能止

Stop when danger is visible

Awareness without behavioural change is not wisdom.

利西南

Choose workable terrain

Move toward support, openness and central coordination.

利見大人

Find capable guidance

反身修德

Turn back and cultivate

Use obstruction to examine capacity, conduct and preparation.

Timing and decisions

The intelligent move may be waiting, returning or changing terrain.

  • Do not advance merely to appear decisive.
