Hexagram 38 · 睽 · Kuí

睽Kui.Opposition.

Fire rises while Lake descends: two movements share a field but follow different directions. Kui examines difference, estrangement and the limited cooperation still possible without forcing false unity.

䷥
Difference does not always need resolution. Identify the small area of workable agreement and preserve distinction everywhere else.
Core situation

Cooperate where interests meet without pretending perspectives are identical.

Kui means divergence, opposition and looking in different directions. Fire moves upward while Lake settles downward; their tendencies separate.

The Judgment grants good fortune in small matters. Large unification is unreliable, but bounded tasks, practical exchanges and precise agreements can still work.

The central question is whether difference can remain informative—or whether suspicion turns every distinction into hostility.

Structural anatomy

Fire above. Lake below.

Fire illuminates upward while Lake opens downward. Each retains its nature; useful relationship depends on respecting rather than erasing the divergence.

The judgment in four movements

Name the difference. Narrow the task. Preserve independent judgment. Test suspicion against reality.

Opposition becomes workable when scope is modest and neither side demands identity as the price of cooperation.

志不同行

Accept different directions

Shared proximity does not guarantee a shared destination.

小事吉

Work through small matters

Bounded agreements remain possible when total alignment does not.

同而異

Find unity within difference

Coordinate what is common without suppressing what must remain distinct.

群疑亡

Let evidence dissolve suspicion

Do not convert unfamiliarity into proof of hostility.

Image principle: Fire above and Lake below form Opposition. The cultivated person shares what is common while preserving difference.

Received text and interpretive layers

Difference can serve a common work without disappearing.

卦辭 · Hexagram statement

The governing proposition

睽:小事吉。

Opposition. In small matters, good fortune.

Keep cooperation specific, realistic and proportionate to the available agreement.

彖傳 · Commentary on the Judgment

Divergent movements, limited response

睽,火動而上,澤動而下;二女同居,其志不同行;說而麗乎明,柔進而上行,得中而應乎剛;是以小事吉。

Fire moves upward and Lake downward; two women share a dwelling but their intentions do not follow the same path.

Yet openness adheres to clarity, and central response remains possible; therefore small matters succeed.

大象傳 · The Great Image

Common ground without sameness

上火下澤,睽;君子以同而異。

Fire above and Lake below: Opposition. The cultivated person is together yet distinct.

Mature cooperation protects both connection and independent judgment.

Six changing-line positions

Timing and decisions

Large unification is premature; small coordination can work.

  • Lower defences when new evidence warrants it.
Diagnostic

Kui is constructive when difference sharpens perception without destroying workable relationship.

Aligned expression

  • Differences are named precisely.

  • Suspicion changes when evidence changes.

Distorted expression

  • Difference is treated as betrayal.
