坤Kun.The Receptive.
Pure receptive capacity: six yielding lines show the power to support, contain and bring form into completion. Kun asks how to respond faithfully without becoming passive, dependent or directionless.
When the task is to support what is true—and give it workable form.
Kun represents Earth doubled: spacious, responsive and capable of carrying diverse forms without competing with them. In a reading, it may indicate support, implementation, stewardship, patience or the need to follow a sound direction.
Receptivity is not surrendering judgment. Kun distinguishes responsive alignment from blind compliance. Its line sequence begins by noticing a small sign, develops disciplined capacity and culminates in conflict when yielding power tries to occupy the initiating position.
The useful question is not “Should I do nothing?” It is “What deserves support, and how can I give it form without losing discernment?”
Earth within. Earth without.
The inner and outer fields share the same trigram. Capacity, responsiveness and implementation can align completely—but the absence of initiating lines makes chosen direction and sound boundaries essential.
Receive direction. Find allies. Carry the work. Remain correct.
Kun shares the originating and developing qualities of Qian, but qualifies beneficial constancy through the image of a mare: strong in endurance, responsive in direction and capable across open ground.
Capacity for development
Make room for the right process to begin and develop. Do not confuse contribution with personal authorship.
Responsive endurance
Follow a sound course with stamina and intelligence. Receptivity still requires strength, orientation and judgment.
Do not force the lead
Taking initiative without direction creates confusion. Clarity returns when the situation’s true organising principle is recognised.
Rest in correctness
Stable alignment is favourable. Support the work consistently without anxiety, rivalry or premature intervention.
Image principle: Earth’s configuration is receptive; the cultivated person carries people and responsibilities through depth of character.
What the classic says—and what each layer is doing.
The Zhouyi statement is the compact source text. The Ten Wings expand its structure and imagery. The English below is an original working rendering, followed by a practical explanation.
The governing proposition
Kun: originating and developing. The mare’s constancy is beneficial. If the cultivated person takes the lead, confusion follows; by responding, direction is found. Companions gather in the southwest and separate in the northeast. Resting in correctness is favourable.
The statement defines receptive power as endurance with orientation. It supports what is sound, finds the appropriate field and remains steady without seizing command.
The scale of receptive order
Complete is Kun’s originating capacity: things receive life through it as it responds to Heaven. Earth’s depth carries all forms; its virtue is broad, inclusive and enabling.
The commentary enlarges Kun beyond obedience. Receptive power provides the conditions, substance and continuity through which beginnings become living outcomes.
The conduct derived from Earth
Earth’s configuration is receptive; the cultivated person carries the world through depth of character.
The image joins accommodation to moral capacity. Carrying more requires substance, boundaries and reliability—not self-erasure.
Yielding movement with inner strength
Kun is supremely yielding, yet firm when it moves; profoundly still, yet definite in its character. By responding, it gains constancy; by containing things, it makes transformation visible.
Qian and Kun receive this additional commentary. Here it prevents receptivity from being mistaken for weakness or shapeless compliance.
How to read the layers: 卦辭 frames the whole situation; 彖傳 explains its governing logic; 大象傳 derives a model of conduct from the trigram image; 爻辭 and 小象傳 diagnose the active stage.
Receptive power develops through six stages of consequence.
Read only the lines that actually change in the consultation. Each line combines the received line text, its 小象傳 and an original practical interpretation.
Frost underfootNotice the first sign · Changes to 24 復
Respond while the pattern is still small. Early evidence reveals direction. Do not wait for a preventable condition to harden before acknowledging it.
Frost marks the first consolidation; what is repeatedly allowed eventually becomes solid ice.
Straight, square and greatNatural capacity · Changes to 07 師
Let sound structure do the work. Directness, boundaries and breadth make elaborate performance unnecessary. Competence becomes reliable when it is internally ordered.
Its movement is direct and properly formed; Earth’s way becomes evident without contrivance.
Contain the patternContribute without claiming · Changes to 15 謙
Carry excellence without demanding ownership. Serve the larger work, preserve quality and complete your responsibility even when recognition belongs elsewhere.
Contained ability is revealed at the proper time; service can express wide intelligence.
A tied sackRestraint protects · Changes to 16 豫
Close what should not be exposed. In a sensitive position, discretion is safer than display. Neither blame nor praise is the present objective.
Careful containment prevents harm.
The yellow lower garmentCentral, understated influence · Changes to 08 比
Let quality remain central and unforced. Authority is expressed through proportion, service and cultural coherence rather than spectacle.
The ornament remains centred; refinement is held within the proper position.
Dragons fighting in the openReceptivity reaches its limit · Changes to 23 剝
Do not let a supporting function become a struggle for supremacy. When receptive and initiating powers lose their distinction, both sides are damaged.
The conflict appears because this mode of action has reached exhaustion.
用六 · When all six lines change to 01 Qian: 利永貞。 Lasting correctness is beneficial. Receptivity completes itself by becoming steady enough to support a new beginning.
Translate receptive capacity into conduct.
Work and leadership
Kun favours implementation, stewardship and operational continuity when the direction is sound and supporting work is properly valued.
- Convert vision into dependable systems.
- Notice weak signals before they harden.
- Carry responsibility without absorbing everything.
Relationships
Receptivity creates safety and continuity, but it becomes harmful when accommodation replaces truth or boundaries.
- Listen without abandoning judgment.
- Support without rescuing compulsively.
- Make needs and limits visible.
Timing and decisions
Kun often asks for alignment before action. Follow what is structurally sound, then sustain it with patience and practical care.
- Act on early evidence at line one.
- Contribute without competing at line three.
- Do not seize command at line six.
Kun is constructive when receptivity retains discernment.
Aligned expression
- Support is directed toward a sound purpose.
- Patience remains attentive to evidence.
- Capacity includes boundaries and recovery.
- Implementation gives ideas durable form.
Distorted expression
- Receptivity becomes passivity or avoidance.
- Service becomes invisible self-erasure.
- Agreement replaces independent judgment.
- Accumulated resentment erupts into rivalry.
