臨Lin.Approach.
Earth comes close above the Lake: influence grows through presence, receptivity and care. Lin describes responsible approach—the use of expanding authority while remembering that every advance carries the seed of eventual decline.
Growing influence is safest when closeness increases care rather than control.
Lin places Earth above Lake. The upper field descends toward what is below, while two firm lines begin to grow from the base.
The structure joins openness with receptivity: genuine authority approaches, listens, teaches and protects instead of remaining distant or merely supervisory.
The useful question is not “How much influence can I gain?” It is “What responsibility accompanies this access—and how do I prepare for the moment when growth begins to reverse?”
Lake within. Earth without.
Openness and exchange support an outwardly receptive field. Influence grows by drawing near without overwhelming what it serves.
Draw near. Teach without exhaustion. Protect without possession. Prepare for the turn.
Lin treats growing influence as stewardship. Progress is real, but it remains sound only when expansion is correct and impermanence is remembered.
Recognise the rising force
Two firm lines grow gradually from below. Expansion is emerging, but its future direction still depends on how it is governed.
Join openness with receptivity
Influence approaches effectively when engagement is welcoming and the larger field remains responsive rather than coercive.
Expand through correctness
Great progress is available, but growth must remain aligned with a principled centre rather than appetite alone.
Prepare while conditions are favourable
Growth does not continue indefinitely. Build resilience before the cycle reverses and influence begins to diminish.

Approach turns influence into education, protection and prepared stewardship.
The governing proposition
臨：元亨利貞。至于八月有凶。
Approach brings great progress; constancy in what is correct is beneficial. By the eighth month there is misfortune.
The warning enters at the moment of expansion: use favourable conditions to build what can survive their eventual change.
Growing strength must remember decline
臨，剛浸而長。說而順，剛中而應，大亨以正，天之道也。至于八月有凶，消不久也。
In Approach, the firm gradually grows. Openness joins receptivity; the firm is central and receives response. Great progress through correctness follows Heaven’s way. Misfortune in the eighth month warns that decline is not far away.
The commentary holds confidence and foresight together: advance fully, but do not behave as though the cycle has ended.
Teach and protect without limit
澤上有地，臨；君子以教思無窮，容保民無疆。
Earth above Lake forms Approach. The cultivated person’s intention to teach is inexhaustible, and the capacity to embrace and protect the people has no boundary.
Proximity creates obligation: knowledge must be shared and authority must enlarge the safety and capacity of those within its reach.
Six qualities of approach.
The lines move from shared and mutually responsive approach through seductive ease, complete presence, wise authority and finally a generous, mature closeness that carries no blame.

Approach through mutual responsiveness rather than isolated ambition. Growing influence is favourable when the intention remains directed toward what is correct.

Mutually responsive approachCentral strength can reach widely · Changes to 24 復
九二：咸臨，吉，無不利。
Let connection carry principled influence outward. A strong centre that responds to the field can approach without limiting benefit to one narrow circle.
小象傳 · 咸臨吉無不利，未順命也.Mutually responsive approach is favourable and beneficial in every respect because it does not merely comply with command.
Sweet approachCharm without substance brings no advantage · Changes to 11 泰
六三：甘臨，無攸利。既憂之，無咎。
Do not substitute pleasant presentation for responsible presence. Once the weakness is recognised and taken seriously, correction can prevent blame from lasting.
小象傳 · 甘臨，位不當也；既憂之，咎不長也.Sweet approach comes from an inappropriate position; once concern is present, blame does not continue.

六四：至臨，無咎。
Draw near without reserve while respecting the role. Complete presence is blameless because proximity and position are properly matched.

六五：知臨，大君之宜，吉。
Senior authority approaches through discernment, not constant intervention. Use the centre well, recognise capable people and let responsibility operate at the proper level.
小象傳 · 大君之宜，行中之謂也.What is appropriate for a great ruler means carrying out the central way.
Generous approachMature presence supports what is within · Changes to 41 損
上六：敦臨，吉，無咎。
At the height of influence, deepen rather than dominate. Thick, generous presence remains favourable because its intention supports the people and work within its care.
小象傳 · 敦臨之吉，志在內也.The good fortune of generous approach comes because the intention is directed inward toward those being served.
Use proximity to expand capability, trust and protection.
Work and leadership
Approaching leadership reduces distance without collapsing roles. Presence should improve information, teaching and responsible delegation.
- Listen before directing the field.

- Build continuity before influence peaks.
Relationships
Closeness becomes constructive when it increases understanding and safety without turning attention into surveillance or possession.
- Approach with openness rather than assumption.

Timing and decisions
Lin is timely when access, trust or influence is increasing and the situation benefits from deliberate presence.
- Use favourable conditions while they last.
