蠱Gu.Work on What Has Been Spoiled.
Wind is trapped beneath Mountain: unattended patterns stagnate and decay. Gu describes inherited disorder, the responsibility to repair it and the preparation required before and after decisive correction.
What has decayed must be understood deeply enough to be repaired at its source.
Gu places Mountain above Wind. Subtle influence continues underneath while the upper structure has stopped responding, allowing distortion to accumulate.
The line texts repeatedly speak of repairing the disorder of father or mother. The language points to inherited systems, habits and unfinished responsibilities rather than simple blame.
The useful question is not “Whose fault is this?” It is “What pattern produced the damage, what must be corrected now and what safeguard prevents repetition?”
Wind within. Mountain without.
Subtle processes continue beneath a stopped structure. Repair requires penetrating diagnosis below and decisive containment above.
Trace the cause. Prepare the intervention. Cross the difficulty. Stabilise the renewal.
Gu treats repair as a complete cycle: understand what preceded the breakdown, act decisively and continue monitoring after the turning point.
Recognise accumulated decay
When subtle influence continues beneath a structure that no longer responds, disorder can become embedded and normalised.
Treat repair as a path to renewal
The presence of damage does not remove possibility; properly addressed disorder can reopen substantial progress.
Cross into difficult work
Repair demands action proportionate to the problem, including the willingness to enter uncertainty and make consequential changes.
Prepare before and stabilise after
Study causes before intervention, then reinforce the new order after the turning point so old patterns do not return.
Image principle: Wind beneath Mountain forms Gu. The cultivated person stirs the people and nourishes virtue—restoring both collective movement and the inner qualities needed to sustain it.
Repair is complete only when the renewed system can sustain itself.
The governing proposition
Work on what has been spoiled brings great progress. It is favourable to cross the great river: three days before the turning point and three days after it.
Repair requires more than the central intervention. Investigate origins beforehand and protect the renewal afterward.
The end of disorder can become a new beginning
The firm is above and the yielding below; penetration meets stopping, creating Gu. Great progress means the world can be brought into order. The end becomes a beginning, following Heaven’s movement.
The commentary frames repair as cyclical responsibility: every ending must contain the design of a sounder beginning.
Restore movement and cultivate character
Wind beneath Mountain forms Work on What Has Been Spoiled. The cultivated person stirs the people and nourishes virtue.
Structural repair and human development belong together. A repaired system fails again if the habits sustaining it remain unchanged.
Six approaches to inherited disorder.
The lines distinguish responsible succession, sensitive correction, forceful repair, permissive delay, recognised restoration and the final choice to stand outside compromised authority.
Repairing the father’s disorderAccept succession without repeating the fault · Changes to 26 大畜
Take responsibility for what you inherit without becoming trapped in blame. The predecessor is released from fault when the successor corrects the pattern; the work is difficult but ends well.
Repairing the father’s disorder means receiving and carrying forward the predecessor’s intention.
Repairing the mother’s disorderCorrect with sensitivity rather than rigidity · Changes to 52 艮
Some inherited damage cannot be corrected through inflexible force. Preserve the central aim while adapting the method to the relationship and its sensitivities.
Repairing the mother’s disorder succeeds by finding the central way.
Forceful repairSome regret, but no major blame · Changes to 40 解
Decisive correction may be imperfect without being wrong. Accept limited regret when stronger intervention is necessary to prevent deeper continuation of the fault.
Repairing the father’s disorder ultimately brings no blame.
Tolerating the disorderDelay allows inherited damage to widen · Changes to 46 升
Do not mistake lenience for repair. Providing more room for a damaged pattern allows it to persist; continuing in that direction brings humiliation.
Tolerating the father’s disorder means that proceeding has not yet achieved correction.
Repair that earns recognitionRestore the legacy through virtue · Changes to 28 大過
Good repair transforms inheritance into earned credibility. Correct the fault without repudiating the whole legacy, and let renewed conduct become worthy of recognition.
Repairing the father’s disorder and gaining recognition means carrying the inheritance through virtue.
Serving no king or lordStand above a compromised system · Changes to 50 鼎
Some integrity cannot be preserved from inside the existing hierarchy. Refuse service when participation would reproduce the disorder, and devote yourself to a higher standard of work.
Not serving king or lord means the intention can serve as a model.
Repair the operating pattern, not only the visible damage.
Work and leadership
Institutional repair begins with evidence, ownership and a redesign strong enough to prevent the same failure from returning.
- Trace failure across process, incentives and oversight.
- Separate accountability from humiliation.
- Monitor the system after the intervention.
Relationships
Inherited family patterns require boundaries and understanding together. Repeating the wound and rejecting the whole lineage are both incomplete responses.
- Name the pattern without reducing a person to it.
- Use firmness proportionate to actual risk.
- Preserve what is sound while ending repetition.
Timing and decisions
Gu is timely when recurring symptoms reveal a neglected cause and superficial fixes can no longer maintain the structure.
- Study the period before the breakdown.
- Act once the repair is properly designed.
- Protect the transition after implementation.
Gu is constructive when responsibility replaces blame and repair reaches the cause.
Aligned expression
- Causes are investigated before action.
- Ownership is accepted without inherited shame.
- Correction matches the nature of the problem.
- New safeguards survive beyond the crisis.
Distorted expression
- Fault-finding substitutes for diagnosis.
- Lenience protects the damaging pattern.
- Symptoms are patched while incentives remain.
- Repair ends before the new order stabilises.
