Hexagram 10 · 履 · Lǚ

履Lu.Treading.

Careful conduct allows movement beside power without provoking harm. Lu develops situational awareness, respect for position and confidence disciplined by caution.

䷉ Heaven over Lake Joy follows strength Conduct · hierarchy · caution Pair: 09 Xiao Xu
䷉
You can tread near power safely when your conduct is accurate, your position understood and your confidence free from presumption.
Core situation

When progress depends on how you step, not how strongly you push.

Lu places Heaven above Lake. Joy and openness move beneath uncompromising strength, like stepping on the tiger’s tail without being bitten.

The danger is real, yet correct conduct makes passage possible. Respect is not timidity; it is intelligence about power, role and consequence.

The useful question is not “Can I get away with this?” It is “What manner of conduct lets me proceed without violating the field?”

Structural anatomy

Lake within. Heaven without.

Inner openness approaches outer strength. Good humour and responsiveness remain useful only when joined to exact awareness.

Strategic application

Move accurately through unequal and high-stakes conditions.

Work and leadership

Use constrained periods to strengthen quality, trust and operational readiness.

  • Improve the process before scaling it.
  • Repair weak coordination.
  • Accumulate resources without announcing victory.

Relationships

Small acts of reliability can restore traction where forceful confrontation cannot.

  • Return to what is workable.
  • Let sincerity reduce defensiveness.
  • Do not press after trust has done its work.

Timing and decisions

Evidence of gathering potential is not yet evidence that full release is timely.

  • Track small gains in capacity.
  • Act within the available sphere.
  • Stop when accumulation reaches fullness.
Diagnostic

Lu is constructive when awareness makes courageous movement proportionate.

Aligned expression

  • Small improvements are compounding.
  • Strength remains available without being forced.
  • Trust and presentation are improving.
  • The threshold for release is observable.

Distorted expression

  • Frustration replaces refinement.
  • Appearance hides weak substance.
  • Pressure is mistaken for progress.
  • Action continues after the field has reached fullness.
