泰Tai.Peace.
Heaven and Earth exchange freely, allowing strength, receptivity and shared purpose to circulate. Tai describes flourishing alignment—and the responsibility to maintain it.
When higher and lower levels exchange instead of separating.
Tai places Earth above Heaven. Heaven rises from within while Earth descends from without, bringing the two powers into communication.
This produces growth because strong initiative is rooted inside and receptive administration surrounds it. Ideas, resources and responsibility can circulate.
The useful question is not “How do I preserve comfort?” It is “What exchange keeps this flourishing system open, fair and responsive?”
Heaven within. Earth without.
Inner strength meets outer receptivity. Initiative rises, support descends and the whole field becomes communicative.
Let the great come in. Keep exchange open. Use prosperity for the whole field.
Tai describes peace as active circulation: Heaven and Earth communicate, different levels cooperate and strength enters where it can serve.

Release the habits, interests and obstructions that narrow the field.

Welcome capacity, integrity and resources that can support the whole system.

Peace depends on real exchange between leadership and the ground, not ceremonial agreement.

Use a favourable period to strengthen circulation, shared benefit and resilience before reversal begins.

The governing proposition
泰：小往大來，吉亨。
Peace: the small departs, the great arrives. Good fortune and progress.
The field opens when lesser obstruction recedes and substantial capacity can enter.
Heaven and Earth communicate
泰，小往大來，吉亨。則是天地交，而萬物通也；上下交，而其志同也。內陽而外陰，內健而外順，內君子而外小人，君子道長，小人道消也。
Heaven and Earth exchange, all beings communicate, and higher and lower share purpose.
Inner strength and outer receptivity create growth when principled influence expands and lesser influence diminishes.

天地交泰，后以財成天地之道，輔相天地之宜，以左右民。

Include rough conditions, cross difficulty and neglect no one at a distance. Release factional preference and hold the centre.

九三：無平不陂，無往不復，艱貞無咎。勿恤其孚，于食有福。
Expect the cycle to turn. Steadfastness under difficulty prevents blame; trust the pattern without wasting the present blessing.

Fluttering downward without relying on wealthSincere exchange across levels · Changes to 34 大壯
六四：翩翩，不富以其鄰，不戒以孚。
Come down into relationship without using wealth as leverage. Trust moves freely when exchange is voluntary and sincere.
小象傳 · 翩翩不富，皆失實也；不戒以孚，中心願也。Material advantage is not the basis; unforced trust reflects an inner wish.

六五：帝乙歸妹，以祉元吉。
Use position to create a fitting alliance. Status serves peace when it enters relationship rather than merely commanding from above.
小象傳 · 以祉元吉，中以行願也。Great good fortune comes as centrality carries the intention into action.

上六：城復于隍，勿用師。自邑告命，貞吝。
Recognise reversal before using force. Restore order locally and communicate clearly; military escalation cannot preserve a cycle that has ended.
小象傳 · 城復于隍，其命亂也。The wall returns to the moat because command has fallen into disorder.
Use a favourable field to strengthen circulation before conditions reverse.
Work and leadership
Open the flow between strategy and execution so that information, resources and responsibility reach the right level.
- Keep leadership connected to ground reality.
- Circulate resources instead of hoarding advantage.
- Use success to build resilience and succession.
Relationships
Peace grows through reciprocity across differences, with support travelling in both directions.
- Keep communication open across unequal roles.
- Let trust rest on sincerity rather than leverage.
- Do not confuse lack of conflict with real exchange.
Timing and decisions
A favourable window should be used, not merely enjoyed. Build the capacity that will remain when the cycle turns.
- Advance while channels remain open.
- Build reserves and distributed competence.
- Watch for the first signs of closure or complacency.
Tai is constructive when flourishing remains connected, useful and reversible.
