蒙Meng.Youthful Folly.
Inexperience meeting the need for instruction. Meng asks how ignorance becomes teachable, how guidance should be offered and when repeated questioning has stopped serving learning.
When uncertainty needs instruction rather than more speculation.
Meng combines Water below with Mountain above: danger and uncertainty are present, while movement lacks a clear path.
The learner must approach sincerely; the teacher must answer clearly without encouraging dependence or repeated testing. Education succeeds when information becomes conduct.
The useful question is not “Can someone tell me again?” It is “Am I prepared to receive, test and apply the instruction?”
Water within. Mountain without.
Inner uncertainty meets an outer boundary. The limit is educational: it slows reactive movement long enough for character, method and judgment to develop.
Seek instruction. Ask sincerely. Apply the answer. Preserve correctness.
Meng supports development when learner and teacher each accept the discipline appropriate to their role.
Ignorance can develop
Inexperience is a beginning condition, not a permanent identity.
The learner must approach
Real learning begins with recognised need and voluntary engagement.
Respect the first answer
Receive instruction attentively before seeking alternatives that merely confirm preference.
Train through correctness
Knowledge becomes useful through repeated application, boundaries and ethical formation.
Image principle: A spring emerges beneath the mountain; the cultivated person acts decisively while nurturing character.
Instruction requires sincerity on both sides.
The source text establishes a boundary against compulsive consultation: the oracle or teacher is not responsible for endlessly replacing judgment.
The governing proposition
Meng develops. I do not seek the inexperienced learner; the learner seeks me. At the first consultation I answer. Repeatedly pressing the question becomes disrespectful, and then no answer is given. Correct persistence is beneficial.
Guidance works when it is requested sincerely, received fully and converted into practice.
Nourish what is correct
Below the mountain lies danger; encountering danger and stopping forms Meng. To nourish correctness in the inexperienced is the work of wisdom.
The commentary treats stopping as protection and education, not punishment for not already knowing.
Decisive action, cultivated character
A spring emerges beneath the mountain; the cultivated person acts with resolve and nurtures virtue.
Learning joins action to character: do something testable, observe the result and let disciplined conduct deepen capacity.
Six stages of instruction and formation.
Each line distinguishes useful discipline from control, teachability from dependency and correction from aggression.
Release ignorance through disciplineSet the rule, then loosen restraint · Changes to 41 損
Establish consequences clearly. Discipline should free learning, not become permanent control.
Correction exists to establish a proper standard.
Hold space for the inexperiencedTeach with breadth · Changes to 23 剝

Capability arises where firmness and receptivity meet.
Do not attach yourself to statusDesire distorts learning · Changes to 18 蠱

The conduct is out of proper order.
Trapped in ignoranceIsolation from substance · Changes to 64 未濟
Reconnect with real knowledge. Remaining surrounded by assumptions while avoiding capable guidance produces regret.
The difficulty comes from being isolated from what is solid.
Teachable innocenceReceptivity becomes strength · Changes to 59 渙
Admit what you do not know. Humility makes appropriate instruction available and learning efficient.
Good fortune comes through receptive humility.
Strike ignorance, not the learnerDefend; do not dominate · Changes to 07 師
Correct the harmful pattern without becoming an aggressor. Firm intervention should protect learning rather than humiliate or conquer.
Protection restores proper relations above and below.
Turn uncertainty into a learning protocol.
