屯Zhun.Difficulty at the Beginning.
New life pushing through disorder: movement begins inside danger before roles, resources and pathways are fully formed. Zhun asks for patient organisation—not premature expansion.
When momentum exists before order.
Zhun combines Thunder below with Water above. Something wants to move, but uncertainty, risk and incomplete coordination surround its emergence.
The task is not to eliminate every difficulty before beginning. It is to distinguish necessary formation pressure from avoidable confusion, then establish helpers, roles and sequence.
The useful question is not “Why is this so hard?” It is “What structure must be established before this beginning can carry its own weight?”
Thunder within. Water without.
The lower trigram initiates movement; the upper trigram presents uncertainty and danger. Growth is real, but it must learn how to move inside conditions it does not yet control.
Begin correctly. Limit movement. Establish help. Build order.
Zhun promises development through correct persistence, but warns against treating an unformed situation as ready for unrestricted advance.
Real developmental potential
The beginning contains genuine life. Difficulty does not cancel its capacity to grow.
Correct persistence
Hold to sound principles while revising the method. Persistence is not repeating a failing approach.
Do not rush outward
Avoid premature scale, distant objectives and commitments the emerging system cannot yet support.
Establish responsible help
Create roles, local authority and dependable coordination. Early structure is more valuable than heroic improvisation.
Image principle: Clouds and thunder form Zhun; the cultivated person sorts tangled threads and brings them into order.
Emergence is difficult because structure is still forming.
The source statement defines the strategic boundary; the commentaries explain why movement and danger must be organised together.
The governing proposition
Zhun: originating and developing; correct persistence is beneficial. Do not press toward a distant objective. Establish responsible helpers.
Potential is present, but the first task is local organisation rather than outward expansion.
Movement inside danger
As firm and yielding first meet, difficulty is born. Movement occurs within danger. The time is full but obscure; establish order without assuming peace has already arrived.
The commentary treats confusion as a formative condition requiring governance, not as proof that the beginning should be abandoned.
Sort the tangled threads
Clouds and thunder form Zhun; the cultivated person orders the warp and weft.
The image calls for sequencing, role clarity and connection: turn raw activity into an intelligible working system.
Textual scope: Unlike Qian and Kun, Zhun has no 文言傳 module. Its standard layers are 卦辭, 彖傳, 大象傳, 爻辭 and 小象傳.
Six stages of an unformed beginning.
Each line shows a different problem of movement, guidance, alliance or resource flow.
Hesitation at the thresholdEstablish the base · Changes to 08 比
Pause without abandoning the work. Hold the correct position and appoint dependable local responsibility before advancing.
Difficulty in advancing does not corrupt the intention; humility gains support.
Blocked movement and delayed unionDo not misread pressure · Changes to 60 節
Distinguish threat from legitimate approach. Delay can protect integrity until the right relationship and timing become clear.
The pressure comes from the strong line below; time restores the normal course.
Hunting without a guideStop before entanglement · Changes to 63 既濟
Do not pursue opportunity without field knowledge. Recognise the warning early and release the chase before desire pulls you deeper.
Unguided pursuit follows the prize into exhaustion.
Seek the right allianceAsk directly · Changes to 17 隨
Movement resumes through partnership. Seek the missing capability openly; a sound alliance makes further action favourable.
Recognising what is needed and seeking it is clarity.
Resources cannot yet circulateWork at the proper scale · Changes to 24 復
Keep commitments proportionate. Small, correct action succeeds; imposing a large programme before benefits can circulate creates failure.
Provision exists, but its distribution is not yet effective.
Distress without a way forwardEnd the exhausted pattern · Changes to 42 益
Do not normalise terminal frustration. The present arrangement cannot continue; grief must become evidence for redesign or departure.
Such a condition cannot be prolonged.
Build the container before demanding speed.
Work and leadership
Clarify ownership, minimum process and decision rights before scaling.
- Appoint capable helpers.
- Sequence dependencies.
- Keep the first scope deliberately small.
Relationships
Do not force certainty while trust and roles are still forming.
- Distinguish caution from rejection.
- Ask for guidance directly.
- Let reliability precede intensity.
Timing and decisions
Advance only as fast as information, support and resource circulation permit.
- Investigate before pursuit.
- Use pilots rather than grand commitments.
- Redesign conditions that cannot continue.
Zhun is constructive when disorder becomes organised learning.
Aligned expression
- Problems are treated as information.
- Help is established early.
- Scope matches available capacity.
- Movement follows a workable sequence.
Distorted expression
- Urgency substitutes for structure.
- Opportunity is pursued without guidance.
- Resources remain trapped or uneven.
- Distress continues without redesign.
