Shi He.Biting Through.
Lightning clarifies above Thunder’s movement: an obstruction between the jaws must be bitten through before union can be restored. Shi He describes evidence, proportionate enforcement and decisive removal of what blocks order.
When an obstruction prevents union, clarity must identify it and action must remove it.
Shi He places Fire above Thunder. Illumination establishes the facts while movement applies the decision.
The figure resembles an open mouth with a firm fourth line lodged between its jaws. Progress returns only when the intervening matter is addressed.
The useful question is not “How severely should we punish?” It is “What exactly blocks order, what evidence establishes it and what proportionate action restores passage?”
Thunder within. Fire without.
Movement is directed by visible facts. Enforcement becomes legitimate when investigation, rule and consequence remain clearly connected.
Establish the facts. Name the obstruction. Apply proportionate consequence. Restore function.
Shi He treats enforcement as a method of reconnection: clarity and action remove what prevents the parts from meeting properly.
Identify what stands between
Do not moralise vague discomfort. Define the concrete obstruction preventing communication, trust or function.
Act through clarity
Movement without evidence becomes force; evidence without action leaves the blockage intact. Both are required.
Make rules and consequences legible
People should know the standard, the evidence and the likely consequence before enforcement becomes necessary.
Use due process
Investigation must distinguish facts, motives and responsibility so consequence removes obstruction without becoming arbitrary punishment.
Image principle: Thunder and lightning form Biting Through. The ancient kings clarified penalties and established the law so standards were visible before consequences were applied.
Clarity and decisive action restore passage through obstruction.
The governing proposition
Biting Through brings progress. It is beneficial to use judicial process.
Order cannot reconnect while a real obstruction remains. Investigation and proportionate enforcement reopen the path.
Movement and illumination work together
Something between the jaws is called Biting Through. The firm and yielding are distinguished; movement joins illumination, and thunder and lightning make matters manifest.
The commentary links legitimate enforcement to discrimination: separate the facts, illuminate the case and then act.
Clarify both law and consequence
Thunder and lightning form Biting Through. The ancient kings made penalties clear and set the laws in order.
Fair enforcement starts before the offence: standards must be intelligible, public and consistently connected to consequence.
Six degrees of correction.
The lines move from an early warning that stops misconduct, through increasingly difficult cases, to the danger of someone who no longer hears correction at all.
Feet in the stocksRestrain the first wrong step · Changes to 35 晉
A small, timely restraint prevents a larger offence. Correct the behaviour at its beginning, while the consequence can still educate rather than merely punish.
The feet are covered by the stocks so that one does not proceed further.
Biting through soft fleshA straightforward case still requires proportion · Changes to 38 睽
The obstruction yields easily, yet force can briefly obscure sensitivity. Resolve what is clear without turning certainty into excess.
Biting through flesh and covering the nose comes from riding upon the firm.
Meeting poisonOld resistance complicates the case · Changes to 30 離
What looked manageable contains old toxicity or concealed resistance. Expect discomfort, verify the evidence and continue carefully; difficulty is not the same as error.
Meeting poison comes from a position that is not appropriate.
Metal arrow in dried fleshHard facts reward arduous correctness · Changes to 27 頤
A resistant case yields only to disciplined effort and straight evidence. Do not confuse toughness with recklessness; success comes through persistence joined to correctness.
Arduous correctness brings good fortune, though the matter is not yet fully illuminated.
Finding yellow goldCentred judgment under continuing risk · Changes to 25 無妄
The central decision-maker reaches what is valuable, but must remain alert. Authority avoids blame when judgment stays balanced, evidence-based and conscious of danger.
Correctness amid danger brings no blame because the appropriate position is attained.
The cangue covers the earsRefusal to listen makes correction severe · Changes to 51 震
Repeated correction has failed because the person will not hear. When warnings are consistently ignored, the eventual consequence becomes heavier and more dangerous.
The cangue covers the ears because hearing has not produced understanding.
Make the obstruction visible, establish proportionate consequence and restore movement.
Work and leadership
Use Shi He when a known blockage persists because standards are vague, evidence is scattered or consequences are inconsistently applied.
- Define the violated standard in plain language.
- Separate evidence from suspicion or reputation.
- Apply a consequence proportionate to the case.
Relationships
In relationships, biting through means naming the actual obstruction rather than punishing indirectly, collecting grievances or escalating through ambiguity.
- State the disputed behaviour precisely.
- Give the other person a fair opportunity to respond.
- Set a boundary that can actually be maintained.
Timing and decisions
Shi He is timely after the facts are sufficiently clear and continued delay would reward obstruction. It is not permission to act from anger.
- Clarify jurisdiction before intervening.
- Match the response to the severity and repetition.
- Review whether movement is restored afterward.
Shi He is constructive when enforcement is clear, evidence-led and directed toward restored order.
Aligned expression
- The obstruction is identified precisely.
- The standard existed before the penalty.
- Evidence and responsibility are distinguished.
- Consequence restores workable order.
Distorted expression
- Anger is disguised as righteous enforcement.
- Rules remain vague until someone is accused.
- Punishment exceeds the verified offence.
- Authority refuses review or correction.
