Hexagram 22 · 賁 · Bì

賁Bi.Grace.

Fire illuminates the Mountain: form makes substance visible without replacing it. Bi describes presentation, cultivated order and the discipline of knowing how far ornament should go.

䷕ Mountain over Fire Illumination held within form Presentation · proportion · simplicity Pair: 21 Shi He
䷕
Grace is not decoration detached from reality. It is form that reveals, orders and dignifies substance without pretending to be the substance itself.
Core situation

Form has power when it clarifies what is real—and limits when it tries to replace it.

Bi places Mountain above Fire. Inner illumination gives meaning to an outer form that contains, presents and stabilises it.

The hexagram concerns language, ritual, design, appearance and social form. These are useful because substance needs an intelligible expression.

Yet the judgment grants only modest advantage in going forward. Ornament can assist a decision, but it cannot carry weight that belongs to character, evidence or structure.

Structural anatomy

Fire within. Mountain without.

Clarity shines within a bounded form. The result is legible order: substance becomes visible, yet movement remains measured.

The judgment in four movements

Reveal the substance. Shape the expression. Respect proportion. Return to simplicity.

Bi distinguishes meaningful form from empty display. Grace helps the essential become perceptible, memorable and socially coherent.

Join clarity to restraint

Expression needs enough light to communicate and enough boundary to prevent embellishment from becoming excess.

Let form refine substance

Grace works through the exchange of firm and yielding: structure gains warmth, while expression gains discipline.

Keep its mandate modest

Presentation can support movement, but it should not decide matters whose weight belongs to truth, capacity or justice.

白賁

Return to unforced simplicity

The most mature form no longer strains to impress. It removes what is unnecessary until substance can stand clearly on its own.

Image principle: Fire at the foot of the Mountain forms Grace. The cultivated person brings clarity to ordinary affairs but does not decide grave judgments through appearance alone.

Received text and interpretive layers

Grace gives substance a visible order while preserving its limits.

Hexagram statement

The governing proposition

Grace brings progress. There is modest benefit in having somewhere to go.

Appropriate form helps things proceed, but the limited wording matters: presentation assists movement without becoming its foundation.

Commentary on the Judgment

Form emerges through the interplay of firm and yielding

Grace brings progress: the yielding comes to adorn the firm, and the firm rises to shape the yielding. Firm and yielding interweave as the patterns of Heaven; clarity joined to stillness forms human culture.

The commentary locates beauty in relationship rather than surface. Form becomes civilising when clarity is given stable and proportionate expression.

The Great Image

Clarify ordinary affairs, but do not judge by appearance

Fire at the foot of the Mountain forms Grace. The cultivated person clarifies the many affairs of government but does not presume to decide legal cases in this way.

Visible order is useful for administration. Serious judgment, however, must penetrate beyond polished presentation to evidence and substance.

Six changing-line positions

Six degrees of form.

The lines move from choosing integrity over display, through relational and ceremonial forms, toward the mature simplicity of unadorned grace.

LINE 1

Grace in the toesWalk rather than borrow status · Changes to 52 艮

Let conduct carry the dignity that borrowed display cannot supply. Refusing the carriage protects independence when accepting it would compromise the proper position.

Leaving the carriage and going on foot means that, by principle, one does not ride.

LINE 2

Grace in the beardExpression follows what gives it meaning · Changes to 26 大畜

Adornment is relational, like a beard depending upon the chin. Ensure the form supports something real instead of demanding attention as an independent achievement.

Grace in the beard arises together with what is above it.

LINE 3

Glossy and richly gracedSustain correctness beneath attraction · Changes to 27 頤

A polished environment is attractive but can soften discipline. Lasting good fortune comes from keeping the underlying commitment firm over time.

The good fortune of lasting correctness means that, in the end, nothing overcomes it.

LINE 4

White horse, winged as if in flightDo not mistake sincere approach for attack · Changes to 30 離

Uncertainty makes a clean and rapid approach look threatening. Pause before defending against it: what appears to be a raider may be seeking union.

The fourth line is in its proper place yet remains doubtful; it is not a raider but a marriage partner, so there is ultimately no fault.

LINE 5

Grace in the hills and gardensA modest offering proves sufficient · Changes to 37 家人

Sincerity can outweigh the embarrassment of a simple presentation. Offer what is appropriate and genuine rather than compensating with spectacle or excess.

The good fortune of the fifth line means there is joy.

LINE 6

White graceSimplicity completes the work · Changes to 36 明夷

At the highest stage, ornament is refined back into clarity. Nothing extra is needed because form and substance are no longer competing for attention.

White grace is without blame because the intention at the top is fulfilled.

Strategic application

Shape expression so that people can recognise the substance without being misled by the surface.

Work and leadership

Use Bi to make ideas, roles and standards legible. Good presentation reduces friction, but credibility still depends on what the form contains.

  • Give important work a clear and coherent form.
  • Match polish to the maturity of the substance.
  • Do not let branding outrun operational reality.

Relationships

Courtesy, ceremony and thoughtful gestures can communicate care. They fail when appearance is used to avoid honest content.

  • Use form to make respect visible.
  • Ask whether the gesture matches the relationship.
  • Prefer simple sincerity to compensating display.

Timing and decisions

Bi is timely when the substance already exists but needs articulation, presentation or ritual form. It is weak for decisions requiring deep investigation.

  • Clarify what the audience must perceive.
  • Use only as much form as the situation needs.
  • Return to evidence for high-stakes judgment.
Diagnostic

Bi is constructive when form reveals substance and remains proportionate to its purpose.

Aligned expression

  • Presentation makes meaning easier to perceive.
  • Outer polish corresponds to inner quality.
  • Courtesy supports honest communication.
  • Simplicity appears when nothing more is needed.

Distorted expression

  • Appearance substitutes for competence.
  • Ornament conceals weak or missing substance.
  • Social form suppresses necessary truth.
  • Display grows after its usefulness has ended.
