訟Song.Conflict.
A sincere claim meets obstruction and opposing force. Song asks how to clarify what matters, seek fair judgment and stop before conflict becomes self-defeating.
When a legitimate disagreement risks becoming an identity.
Song places Heaven above Water. Heaven rises while Water descends: their movements separate, producing opposition rather than easy exchange.
The text does not forbid assertion. It distinguishes a sincere claim from the compulsion to pursue victory at any cost.
The useful question is not “How do I win?” It is “What must be clarified, judged or released before the dispute consumes more than it protects?”
Water within. Heaven without.
Inner danger meets outward firmness. When fear and force pull in different directions, principled procedure matters more than escalation.
Verify the claim. Stay vigilant. Seek impartial judgment. Do not pursue conflict to the end.
Song does not demand silence. It demands limits, evidence and a resolution process stronger than personal insistence.
Begin with sincerity
A claim deserves attention when it is grounded in fact and good faith—not manufactured grievance.
Recognise obstruction
Pressure and uncertainty require vigilance. Do not confuse conviction with safety.
Stop before the bitter end
Timely settlement can be favourable; totalising conflict turns even a valid claim into damage.
Use impartial authority
Seek a trusted mediator, judge or governing standard. Do not launch a major venture while the dispute remains unresolved.
Image principle: Heaven and Water move in opposite directions; the cultivated person plans carefully at the beginning so preventable disputes do not mature.
A sincere claim still requires a disciplined ending.
The governing proposition
訟:有孚,窒惕,中吉,終凶。利見大人,不利涉大川。
Song: there is sincerity, yet obstruction calls for vigilance. Stopping at the middle is favourable; pursuing it to the end brings misfortune. It is beneficial to see a great person and not beneficial to cross the great river.
The statement joins legitimacy to restraint: being right does not remove the need for proportion.
Danger below, strength above
訟,上剛下險,險而健,訟。終凶,訟不可成也。利見大人,尚中正也。
Conflict arises from danger below and strength above. Completion is ominous because contention must not be made an end in itself; impartial centrality deserves honour.
The commentary shifts attention from defeating an opponent to restoring a just centre.
Prevent conflict at the beginning
天與水違行,訟;君子以作事謀始。
Heaven and Water move contrary to one another; this is Conflict. The cultivated person plans at the beginning of affairs.
Clear roles, terms, evidence and exit conditions are conflict prevention—not bureaucracy for its own sake.
Six ways a dispute changes character.
The lines move from an early disagreement through withdrawal, principled restraint, lawful judgment and the unstable prestige of winning by contention.

Timing and decisions
Do not undertake a major crossing while authority, ownership or trust remains actively contested.

Song is constructive when conflict restores order without becoming permanent.
