䷄
Waiting is strategic when time is being used to preserve strength, improve readiness and observe the crossing.
Core situation

When the destination is valid but the passage is not yet ready.

Xu places Water above Heaven. Strong forward capacity is present below, while danger remains ahead.

The correct response is neither retreat nor impulsive advance. Maintain confidence, provision the system and let evidence determine when the crossing becomes viable.

The useful question is not “How long must I wait?” It is “What must remain strong, nourished and observable until action becomes timely?”

Structural anatomy

Heaven within. Water without.

Inner strength meets an outer field of risk. Because strength does not rush blindly into danger, waiting preserves freedom of action.

The judgment in four movements

Trust the process. Preserve correctness. Nourish capacity. Cross when ready.

Xu does not glorify delay. It defines the internal conditions that make eventual action effective.

有孚 · YOU FU

Maintain inner trust

Do not let temporary uncertainty dissolve commitment to what the evidence still supports.

光亨

Clarity can develop

Waiting creates visibility when attention remains open rather than anxious.

貞吉

Hold the correct course

Preserve principles and readiness without manufacturing movement.

利涉大川

The crossing will come

Preparation serves action. When conditions align, commit fully rather than remaining attached to waiting.

Image principle: Clouds rise above Heaven; the cultivated person eats, drinks and rests—maintaining the resources needed for the right moment.

Received text and interpretive layers

Wait without becoming depleted.

彖傳 · Commentary on the Judgment

Strength does not enter danger blindly

需,須也;險在前也。剛健而不陷,其義不困窮矣。

Xu is waiting: danger lies ahead. Firm strength does not allow itself to fall into danger and therefore does not become exhausted.

The commentary defines restraint as an expression of strength, not its absence.
