同人Tong Ren.Fellowship with Others.
Fire brings clarity beneath Heaven’s strength. Tong Ren describes cooperation built around an open, principled purpose rather than private loyalty, convenience or faction.
Cooperation becomes durable when it serves something larger than the group.
Tong Ren places Heaven above Fire. Fire illuminates distinctions while reaching upward toward Heaven’s expansive direction.
The figure does not erase difference. It asks people to recognise what can be shared publicly while preserving the distinctions that keep responsibility clear.
The useful question is not “How do I make everyone agree?” It is “What purpose is open, principled and strong enough to organise real cooperation?”
Fire within. Heaven without.
Inner clarity meets outer strength. Differences become visible, yet a wider purpose allows people to act together.
Meet in the open. Establish common purpose. Cross difficulty together. Keep principle above faction.
Tong Ren makes cooperation possible by widening the basis of belonging beyond family, clique or private advantage.
Meet beyond the enclosure
Build fellowship in an open field where participation rests on purpose rather than proximity or private ties.
Cross difficulty together
A genuinely aligned group can undertake risks that isolated individuals cannot carry responsibly.
Keep cooperation principled
Shared enthusiasm is insufficient; the basis, methods and obligations of fellowship must remain correct.
Distinguish within unity
Classify roles, capabilities and conditions clearly so that cooperation does not collapse into confusion.
Image principle: Heaven together with Fire forms Fellowship. The cultivated person groups what belongs together and distinguishes the nature of things.
Fellowship becomes powerful when clarity serves a purpose larger than preference.
The governing proposition
Fellowship with others in the open: progress. It is favourable to cross the great river and favourable for the cultivated person to remain correct.
Open purpose and principled conduct allow a group to take on consequential work.
Clarity responds to strength
The yielding line is correctly centred and responds to Heaven. Clarity joined with strength allows the cultivated person to understand the aims of all under Heaven.
Common purpose becomes credible when responsive intelligence and strong direction meet through correct positions.
Organise difference without erasing it
Heaven together with Fire forms Fellowship. The cultivated person groups clans and distinguishes things.
Effective unity depends on accurate distinctions: who is responsible, what belongs together and where differences matter.
Six tests of fellowship.
The lines move from open access through faction, hidden conflict, restraint, hard-won reunion and fellowship that remains too distant to fulfil its aim.
Fellowship at the gateBegin without private exclusion · Changes to 33 遯
Open the threshold. Cooperation begins without blame when entry is not controlled by hidden preference.
Going out through the gate to join with others—who could blame this?
Fellowship within the clanPrivate loyalty narrows the field · Changes to 01 乾
Do not confuse intimacy with universality. A group organised around its own people becomes too narrow for the wider task.
Fellowship confined to the clan follows a path of limitation.
Weapons hidden in the thicketSuspicion makes cooperation impossible · Changes to 25 無妄
Hidden hostility freezes the field. Surveillance and defensive positioning prevent movement even when no attack occurs.
Weapons are hidden against a strong opponent; after three years without rising, how could action proceed?
Climb the wall but do not attackRestraint restores principle · Changes to 37 家人
Capability does not make aggression correct. Recognising the limit and declining the attack restores a favourable course.
The attack cannot be justified; good fortune comes when difficulty returns conduct to principle.
First crying, then laughterSeparation is overcome · Changes to 30 離
Real reunion may require struggle. Sincere alignment survives separation and eventually reaches the meeting it has worked to earn.
The initial distress comes from centred sincerity; the great forces meet after overcoming what divided them.
Fellowship at the outskirtsNo regret, but the aim remains incomplete · Changes to 49 革
Distance avoids entanglement but limits fulfilment. There is no regret, yet fellowship kept at the margins cannot realise its full public purpose.
Fellowship at the outskirts means the intention has not yet been fulfilled.
Build cooperation around a purpose that can survive difference.
Work and leadership
Make the common mission explicit, then assign roles according to capability rather than loyalty.
- Invite participation beyond the usual inner circle.
- Keep decision rights and accountability visible.
- Use shared standards to cross difficult terrain.
Relationships
Connection strengthens when people can belong without pretending their needs, roles or perspectives are identical.
- Distinguish intimacy from shared purpose.
- Do not turn the relationship into a private faction.
- Resolve hidden hostility before demanding unity.
Timing and decisions
Collective action is timely when purpose, principle and capacity align—not merely when enthusiasm is high.
- Test whether the purpose is genuinely public.
- Surface factional interests before commitment.
- Cross the difficult threshold only with clear terms.
Tong Ren is constructive when common purpose remains open, differentiated and principled.
Aligned expression
- The mission extends beyond the inner circle.
- Differences in role and capability remain clear.
- Conflict is addressed before it becomes covert.
- Collective risk is matched by collective commitment.
Distorted expression
- Belonging depends on private loyalty.
- Agreement is demanded at the price of honesty.
- Hidden rivalry controls public cooperation.
- The group exists mainly to protect itself.
