Hexagram 31 · 咸 · Xián

咸Xian.Influence.

Lake rests above Mountain: openness meets stillness, and each responds to the other. Xian examines attraction, mutual influence and the receptive space through which genuine connection becomes possible.

Influence is strongest when it does not force. Create enough inner space to receive another person, signal or reality accurately.
Core situation

Allow responsiveness to move in both directions.

Xian means influence, feeling and mutual stimulation. Mountain provides stillness below while Lake offers openness above; neither dominates the exchange.

The hexagram opens the second half of the King Wen sequence with relationship. Attraction can initiate union, but only correct conduct turns response into something trustworthy.

The central question is whether influence arises through sincere receptivity or through anxiety, performance and manipulation.

Structural anatomy

Lake above. Mountain below.

Joyful openness rests upon disciplined stillness. The younger man places himself below the younger woman: influence begins through respect rather than command.

The judgment in four movements

Become receptive. Respond sincerely. Keep attraction correct. Let relationship take form.

Influence succeeds when openness and restraint work together. Response without boundaries becomes reactivity; stillness without openness becomes isolation.

感應

Recognise mutual response

Real influence changes both sides of the encounter.

止而說

Join stillness with openness

Pause impulse so that pleasure and connection remain discerning.

利貞

Keep attraction correct

Feeling must remain answerable to conduct and consequence.

Receive without preloading

An unoccupied centre can hear what another person is actually saying.

Image principle: Lake upon Mountain forms Influence. The cultivated person empties the heart-mind in order to receive others.

Received text and interpretive layers

Correct influence begins with reciprocal responsiveness.

Hexagram statement

The governing proposition

Influence. Success. Correctness is beneficial. Taking a wife brings good fortune.

The marriage image represents committed union formed through proper mutual response.

Commentary on the Judgment

Feeling and response create relationship

Xian is mutual feeling. Yielding is above and firm below; the two energies respond and join. Stillness combines with joy.

Heaven and Earth influence one another so beings arise; wise influence brings human hearts into harmony.

The Great Image

Receive through emptiness

Lake upon Mountain: Influence. The cultivated person receives others through inner openness.

Receptivity is not passivity; it is freedom from the assumptions that distort contact.

Six changing-line positions

Influence moves through the body.

The line images rise from toe to calf, thigh, heart, upper back and speech—showing how impulse becomes movement, fixation, inner orientation and expression.

LINE 1

Influence in the big toeThe impulse begins but has not yet governed action · Changes to 49 革

A first sensation points outward but remains preliminary. Notice attraction before granting it authority.

Influence in the toe shows that intention is directed outward.

LINE 2

Influence in the calfReactive movement is dangerous; remaining brings good fortune · Changes to 28 大過

The body wants to move before judgment is ready. Stay centred until response becomes deliberate rather than reflexive.

Remaining is fortunate because responsive restraint avoids harm.

LINE 3

Influence in the thighFollowing another compulsively brings regret · Changes to 45 萃

Desire pulls movement behind its object. Recover your own position before attachment becomes submission.

The intention follows another and therefore holds to what is lower.

LINE 4

Restless coming and goingCorrectness removes regret; calculation limits influence · Changes to 39 蹇

Steady integrity attracts genuine response. Constantly managing who follows your thoughts reduces influence to strategy.

Correctness prevents harmful influence; restless calculation is not yet great or clear.

LINE 5

Influence in the upper backLimited susceptibility prevents regret but reaches little · Changes to 62 小過

One is affected only at the periphery, away from the heart. This avoids entanglement, but it does not create deep connection.

Influence in the upper back concerns what is peripheral to the intention.

LINE 6

Influence in jaw, cheeks and tongueWords substitute for embodied influence · Changes to 33 遯

Persuasion becomes all mouth. Speech cannot manufacture the mutual response that conduct has failed to establish.

Influence in jaw, cheeks and tongue is merely fluent speech.

Strategic application

Influence begins with the quality of your receptivity.

Work and leadership

Use Xian when trust, adoption or alignment must emerge without force.

  • Listen before designing the intervention.
  • Create conditions for voluntary response.
  • Let conduct carry more weight than rhetoric.

Relationships

Attraction is information, not yet a decision or commitment.

  • Distinguish mutuality from pursuit.
  • Pause reactive movement.
  • Keep desire answerable to respect.

Timing and decisions

Notice where the signal is felt and how quickly it seeks action.

  • Do not promote first sensation into certainty.
  • Wait until response includes the centre.
  • Avoid engineering agreement through pressure.
Diagnostic

Xian is constructive when openness permits mutual change without surrendering integrity.

Aligned expression

  • Influence moves in both directions.
  • Stillness precedes response.
  • Attraction remains correct and respectful.
  • Words are supported by conduct.

Distorted expression

  • Impulse is treated as destiny.
  • Following replaces self-possession.
  • Agreement is engineered through pressure.
  • Performance substitutes for genuine connection.
