離Li.The Clinging.
Fire rises above Fire: illumination depends upon what sustains it. Li examines clarity, attachment and the disciplined receptivity that allows intelligence to keep shining without consuming its source.
Illuminate by adhering to what is correct.
Li means both brightness and attachment. Fire has no independent form; it becomes visible by clinging to fuel. In the same way, perception, reputation and influence depend upon the values and structures that sustain them.
The doubled Fire trigram intensifies visibility. Yet the yielding centres show that durable brilliance requires receptivity, proportion and an accurate relationship with reality.
The question is not merely whether you can see clearly, but what your clarity serves—and whether its source can endure.
Fire above. Fire below.
Firm outer lines surround a yielding centre in each trigram. Brightness is strong around receptive intelligence: illumination depends upon correct attachment.
Attach correctly. Receive reality. Sustain the light. Illuminate beyond yourself.
Li becomes constructive when brilliance is anchored to what is true rather than fed by spectacle, ego or uncontrolled intensity.
Make attachment correct
Clarity inherits the quality of what it serves.
Remain receptive at the centre
Intelligence stays accurate when it can receive correction.
Continue the brightness
Illumination must be renewed, not assumed.
Cultivate steady docility
Patient responsiveness carries more light than aggression.
Image principle: Doubled brightness forms Li. The great person continues the light and illuminates the four directions.
Brightness transforms when it adheres to what is right.
The governing proposition
離:利貞,亨。畜牝牛,吉。
The Clinging. Correctness is beneficial; success. Cultivating the receptivity of a cow brings good fortune.
Brilliance needs disciplined attachment and patient responsiveness.
Light adheres to order
離,麗也;日月麗乎天,百穀草木麗乎土,重明以麗乎正,乃化成天下。柔麗乎中正,故亨;是以畜牝牛吉也。
Li means attachment. Sun and moon adhere to Heaven; plants adhere to Earth. Doubled brightness joined to correctness transforms the world.
Yielding intelligence occupies central and correct positions; therefore illumination can succeed.
Continue the light
明兩作,離;大人以繼明照于四方。
Brightness rises twice: Li. The great person continues the light and illuminates the four directions.
Clarity becomes leadership when it is sustained and shared.
