Why leap months exist

The calendar needs an extra month—not an extra day.

A twelve-month lunar year is about 354 days. The solar year is about 365 days. That difference accumulates quickly enough to push festivals and seasonal month names out of position.

Roughly every two or three years, the lunisolar system inserts an additional lunar month. The correction restores the relationship between lunar months and the Sun-based seasonal framework.
