Different cycles. Different coordinate systems.
The Chinese year animal and the Western Sun sign are both popular shorthand. Neither equals a complete birth chart. The first belongs to a twelve-Branch year cycle; the second identifies the Sun’s zodiacal position. Full BaZi and full Western astrology add much more information.
There is no reliable one-to-one mapping such as Dragon = Leo. Similar descriptions are analogies, not technical equivalences.
The comparison most articles miss
Compare shorthand with shorthand—and full chart with full chart.
Mixing a Chinese year animal with a complete Western horoscope creates a false comparison. There are four distinct levels.
Year animal
The animal name represents the Earthly Branch of the birth year. It provides broad cultural symbolism but groups enormous populations together.
Sun sign
The familiar Aries-through-Pisces label identifies the Sun’s sign. It is only one placement in a full natal horoscope.
BaZi · Four Pillars
Year, month, day, and hour each contain a Stem and Branch. The Day Master is read inside the entire eight-character structure.
Natal horoscope
Planets, signs, houses, angles, aspects, rulerships, and timing techniques create a much denser interpretive framework.

The number twelve does not make the systems interchangeable.

Granularity is not validation. A full chart contains more symbolic relationships than a single sign, but detail alone does not prove personality or predictive accuracy.
Why birthdays near boundaries cause confusion
“What is my sign?” depends on which convention you mean.
The page should never calculate a Chinese year animal by subtracting years alone or assume every system changes on January 1.
Lunar New Year
Public year-animal references commonly change at Chinese New Year, whose Gregorian date varies.
Li Chun convention
Many BaZi schools use the solar term Li Chun as the year boundary. Practitioners must state their convention.
Exact solar ingress
Cusp dates vary slightly by year, time zone, and exact moment. A chart calculation is preferable near a boundary.
Compatibility and timing
Single-sign matching is entertainment-level shorthand.
More than animal pairs
Branches can combine, clash, harm, punish, or form larger configurations across all four pillars. Stems, Ten Gods, season, and timing also matter.
More than Sun signs
Synastry compares planets, angles, houses, aspects, rulerships, and chart conditions. One Sun-sign pairing cannot represent the whole relationship.
Compatibility is lived
Consent, behaviour, communication, values, safety, circumstances, and willingness to repair matter more than a symbolic match score.

Identify the level
Ask whether the claim concerns a year animal, Sun sign, BaZi chart, or natal horoscope.
Confirm the boundary
Use the correct date, time, location, calendar, and stated convention.
Read relationships
Avoid interpreting any sign or symbol in isolation.
Return to evidence
Use observed behaviour and real conditions for consequential decisions.
Use zodiac shorthand for cultural orientation. Use complete charts for deeper traditional study. Use evidence for actual decisions.
