Duke Virtue (歲德) is an annual Heavenly Stem marker associated with orderly initiative, constructive authority and actions that accord with the governing quality of the year. This page uses the traditional rule: Yang years retain their own stem; Yin years take the Yang stem that combines with them.
Alignment with the year must still become competent action.
Traditional almanac practice treats Sui De as an auspicious quality of the year: a channel for orderly leadership, appropriate initiative, repair and work that benefits from acting with the grain of the annual environment.
In a BaZi context, a matching visible stem may describe the person, role or operating domain through which that quality becomes accessible. It can point toward sponsorship, procedural support or well-timed execution, but it does not guarantee status or success.
The calculation begins from the Heavenly Stem of the year—not its zodiac animal or Earthly Branch. This is the key distinction from Dragon Virtue, which uses a Year-Branch rotation.

Rule: a Yang Year Stem is its own Duke Virtue. A Yin Year Stem maps to the Yang Stem with which it forms one of the Five Stem Combinations.

Is Duke Virtue the same as the Grand Duke?
No. Duke Virtue is a favourable Heavenly Stem marker. The Grand Duke refers to the governing annual branch and its wider annual-star framework.
Why does a Yin year map to a Yang stem?
The traditional rule takes the Yang stem that combines with the Yin Year Stem: Ji to Jia, Yi to Geng, Xin to Bing, Ding to Ren and Gui to Wu.
Can Duke Virtue be read natally?
Yes, if the birth Year Stem is explicitly used as the anchor. Keep that fixed natal reference separate from a current-year calculation.
What if the target stem is absent?
The visible natal chart does not contain it under this presence rule. The stem may still arrive through a Luck Pillar or later timing.
Is Duke Virtue Combo calculated the same way?
No. Duke Virtue Combo is the Yin stem that combines with the Duke Virtue target and should be calculated as its own marker.
