24 Mountains Reference
Authoritative mapping of the 24 directional mountains (N1–NW3): degree ranges, opposites, trigrams, elements, boundary rules, and Period 9 notes — for precise sitting/facing and chart construction.
What the 24 Mountains Are
The 24 Mountains are a precision ring around the compass, dividing 360° into 24 equal segments of 15° each. These segments label the facing and sitting of a property using an industry-standard code (N1…NW3). Every Flying Star chart starts here: get the mountain right, and your base, mountain, and facing stars are mapped correctly.
Master Table — Degrees, Codes, Labels, Opposites, Trigrams
Use this table to assign a mountain from a compass reading. Degrees are in magnetic north by convention (Luo Pan practice). If your app uses true north, convert or disable true-north calibration.

Eight Cardinal Groups & Trigram Nature
North (N1–N3) · 坎 Kan · Water
Flow, wisdom, movement. Useful for mobility, communications, and supply chains when supported by chart stars and landform.
Northeast (NE1–NE3) · 艮 Gen · Mountain
Stillness, schooling, consolidation. Great for discipline and asset building; avoid stagnation by pairing with healthy Water forms.
East (E1–E3) · 震 Zhen · Wood
Initiation, growth, eldest son. Suits expansion projects; balance with Metal to trim chaos if #3 star is strong.
Southeast (SE1–SE3) · 巽 Xun · Wind
Wealth wind, persuasion, networks. Strong for marketing, partnerships, and reputational compounding.
South (S1–S3) · 離 Li · Fire
Visibility, branding, recognition. Excellent for launches in Period 9; guard burnout if Fire piles up.
Southwest (SW1–SW3) · 坤 Kun · Earth
Matriarch, stability, real estate. Foundation-building; beware over-yin heaviness without supportive Wood.
West (W1–W3) · 兌 Dui · Metal
Exchange, negotiation, precision. Sales cycles and refinement work thrive here.
Northwest (NW1–NW3) · 乾 Qian · Heaven/Metal
Leadership, strategy, benefactors. Pair with good mountain forms for long-term authority.
How to Measure Accurately (Compass & Luo Pan)
- Stand at the main facing (activity/outward side), back to the property, looking out.
- Level your device. Take 3–5 readings; avoid cars, metal gates, or power boxes.
- Use magnetic north. Disable true-north calibration or convert to magnetic before assigning a mountain.
- Average your readings. If near a boundary (e.g., 7.5°, 22.5°, …), re-measure later in the day.
- Assign N1…NW3 from the table; your sitting is exactly 180° opposite.
Tolerance: Target ±1°. A small shift over a boundary can change your mountain and the star flight.
How to Use the 24 Mountains in Flying Star Analysis
- Chart Construction: Determine facing/sitting → set Period → place base stars → layer mountain & facing stars (飞星排盘).
- Landform Pairing: Mountains (砂) at sitting, Water (水) at facing: apply 旺山旺向 where appropriate; watch for 上山下水 leaks.
- Opposites & Replacements: Opposite mountains matter for replacements (换星) and facing changes.
- Boundary Cases: A “兼向” (straddling) reading near seams may require senior rules (正针/缝针) to resolve.
- Timing Layers: Overlay annual/monthly/daily stars after the natal chart for scheduling decisions.
When in doubt, validate with real outcomes: door usage, traffic patterns, and the “story” of the home should agree with your mountain selection.
Period 9 (2024–2043) — Highlights by Group
- South (離 · Fire): Energised; strong for visibility, media, launches. Balance with Water or Earth if Fire overheats.
- Southeast (巽 · Wind): Supports persuasion and wealth flows; ensure integrity of forms, avoid “hollow wind.”
- North (坎 · Water): Can be stressed in Fire period; prioritise containment and clean water exits.
- NW (乾) & W (兌): Authority and commerce can compound if landform is supportive.
Boundary Rules & Common Errors
- True vs Magnetic North: Calibrate correctly. Luo Pan practice uses magnetic.
- Reading at the wrong spot: Measure at the primary facing where qi and people move, not necessarily the mailbox.
- Door not used: If a “grand” door is rarely used, read the actual active facing.
- Seam (兼) readings: If you’re within ~0.5–1° of a boundary, seek senior rules or defer to practical outcomes.
- One-shot reading: Always take multiple readings, different times of day.
FAQs
Is sitting always opposite facing?
Yes. Sitting and facing are 180° apart. The opposite mountain in the table shows the pair.
What if my reading drifts during the day?
Average multiple readings. Stabilise your stance, avoid metal, and use magnetic north.
Can two houses with the same facing have different outcomes?
Yes. Landform (incoming/outgoing water, mountains, roads) and internal layout determine how stars manifest.
Do I need a Luo Pan?
A Luo Pan is ideal. A calibrated phone compass can work if you control for interference and use magnetic north.
