How to Build a Natal Flying Star Chart
The natal chart is the property’s permanent DNA. Build it once—correctly—then read it with time overlays (annual, monthly, daily, hourly) for timing. Follow the steps below in order.
What You’ll Need
Step 1 — Confirm Sitting & Facing
Identify the facing (activity/outward) and sitting (support/back) of the property. They are 180° apart.
Tips
- Use the main active frontage (traffic, view, openness) as facing, not just the door hinge location.
- Record degrees to at least 0.5°–1.0° precision to avoid wrong mountain selection within the 24 Mountains.
Reference: Sitting vs Facing, 24 Mountains.
Step 2 — Determine the Property’s Period
The Period locks the base (period) star distribution of the natal chart.
General Rules
- New build: Period is set by completion/first-occupation within its 20-year range.
- Major structural renovation: Roof opened, major walls removed/added, main door relocated → may re-period the property.
- Activation: Doors/windows opened post-works to “invite Qi”—commonly required to confirm the change.
Details: Nine Periods of Time.
Step 3 — Draw the Nine Palaces on the Plan
Overlay a 3×3 Luo Shu grid proportionally over the usable interior. Align to facing/sitting axis.
Good Practice
- Align the grid to the facing line (not magnetic north), then slice spaces into 9 equal palaces.
- For odd shapes (L-shaped, split-level), chart the main mass and annotate exceptions in notes.
- Mark room functions per palace (door/bed/stove/desk) for interpretation later.
Step 4 — Assign Mountain, Facing/Water, and Base Stars
Every palace in the natal chart holds three numbers: Mountain Star (people/health), Facing or Water Star (wealth/activity), and the Base Star (period energy).
Star Roles & Reading Order
Assignment Workflow (School-Neutral)
- Base stars: Use the template/distribution for the property’s Period to populate the center and all palaces.
- Facing stars: Seed the facing palace according to your method, then fly to other palaces per the standard sequence.
- Mountain stars: Seed the sitting palace and distribute across the grid per the same sequence logic.
Because distribution rules differ by lineage (forward/reverse sequences, seeding orders), use the Flying Star Calculator to avoid mismatches. This page focuses on structure and audit steps.
Quality Checks (Pre-Overlay)
- Facing & sitting are exactly 180° apart and fall into correct 24-Mountain segments.
- Base stars match the Period template (center star equals Period star by your lineage’s rules).
- Mountain/Facing stars follow the expected flying order and land in the correct palaces.
- Room functions are correctly mapped to palaces (beds, stoves, doors, work desks).
Step 5 — Apply Time Overlays (Annual → Monthly → Daily → Hourly)
Overlays do not change the natal chart; they stack on top of it for timing and event windows.
Overlay Order & How to Read
Rule of thumb: Natal → Annual → Monthly → Daily → Hourly. Do not contradict the natal chart—use overlays to choose when and where to engage.
Practical Sequence
- Read the natal Mountain/Facing/Base in the target palace.
- Layer the Annual star of that palace; note Element interactions (see Nine Stars).
- Refine with the Monthly star—seek supportive element relationships or timely 9/1/6 combinations in Period 9 contexts.
- Choose favorable Daily/Hourly windows to execute.
Worked Examples (Structure-First)
Example A — Period 9 Apartment, Facing E2 (82.5°–97.5°)
- Confirm facing E2 at main frontage; sitting W2.
- Property completed in 2025 → Period 9.
- Overlay Luo Shu grid; annotate entrance in East palace, master bed in Southwest, kitchen in South.
- Fill Base stars using Period-9 distribution template.
- Seed and fly Facing stars from East; seed and fly Mountain stars from West.
- Interpret master bedroom (SW): Mountain star priority; check Annual & Monthly overlays for relationship/health timing.
Example B — Period 8 Landed Home, Renovated in 2024 (Possible Re-Period)
- Original completion 2010 (Period 8). Major works in 2024 opened the roof and relocated main door.
- Qi activation performed after works → Treat as Period 9 unless contrary evidence appears.
- Rebuild natal chart under Period 9; compare outcomes with pre-2024 reading.
- Use Annual/Monthly overlays to validate which Period reading matches lived results.
Edge Cases & Field Notes
Irregular Shapes, Multi-Entrances, Split Levels
- L-shape / missing sectors: Chart the main mass; annotate missing/extended palaces; weight readings by use and volume.
- Multiple doors: Use the door with the highest activity and Qi exchange as the facing reference.
- Split levels: Build floor-by-floor charts sharing the same facing; note vertical functions (bed above stove, etc.).
Water & Mountain Features (External Forms)
- Water (Facing star): Favor active, clean water and open flows in facing star wealth palaces.
- Mountain (People star): Favor solid support (wall, hill, building) for mountain star palaces, especially bedrooms.
Form must not contradict the star intent.
