剝Bo.Splitting Apart.

Mountain rests upon Earth while its support erodes from below. Bo describes stripping away, structural decline and the wisdom of preserving the remaining seed instead of forcing expansion.

䷖ Mountain over Earth One firm line above five yielding lines Erosion · reduction · preservation Pair: 24 Fu
䷖
Splitting Apart is not a command to rescue every failing structure. It asks what must be released, what foundation must be strengthened and what living seed must survive the decline.
Core situation

When support is disappearing, stop advancing and protect what can carry renewal.

Bo places Mountain above Earth. A high structure cannot remain secure when the ground beneath it is progressively removed.

Five yielding lines rise beneath one remaining firm line. The image is not sudden collapse alone, but erosion advancing layer by layer from foundation to direct exposure.

The strategic response is restraint: do not add weight to a failing system. Reduce commitments, reinforce the base and preserve the essential principle that can seed the next cycle.

Structural anatomy

Earth within. Mountain without.

Receptive Earth supports still Mountain, yet the figure shows that support being stripped away. Stability depends on strengthening below, not decorating above.

The judgment in four movements

Stop expansion. Read the erosion. Reinforce below. Preserve the seed.

Bo treats decline as a process with visible stages. Wisdom lies in responding before the loss reaches what is irreplaceable.

Do not force advance

When the support system is shrinking, forward movement adds exposure. Stabilise before pursuing growth.

Track the changing base

Decline becomes dangerous when small losses quietly replace the firm conditions on which the whole structure depends.

Strengthen what carries the whole

Security at the top comes from investing downward: capacity, trust, maintenance and the people bearing the system.

Protect the remaining seed

Do not consume the last viable resource. Preserve what contains the pattern of renewal even when the current form must end.

Image principle: Mountain rests upon Earth and forms Splitting Apart. Those above secure their position by thickening the support below.

Received text and interpretive layers

Decline has a season; restraint protects what can return.

Hexagram statement

The governing proposition

Splitting Apart. It is not beneficial to have somewhere to go.

This is a condition for conservation rather than conquest. Avoid adding commitments while support continues to deteriorate.

Commentary on the Judgment

Know the cycle of decrease and increase

Bo means stripping away: the yielding changes the firm. It is not beneficial to go forward, because lesser forces are growing. Yield and stop, observing the image. The cultivated person values the cycles of decrease and increase, fullness and emptiness.

The commentary treats decline as part of temporal order. Accurate timing replaces panic: stop what cannot advance and preserve capacity for the turn.

The Great Image

Security above depends on depth below

Mountain rests upon Earth and forms Splitting Apart. Those above strengthen what is below in order to secure their dwelling.

The response to erosion is structural: restore the foundations, relationships and carrying capacity that make higher order possible.

Six changing-line positions

Six stages of erosion.

The lines trace deterioration from the feet of the bed to the frame, the skin and finally the fate of the dwelling—while identifying the remaining seed of renewal.

LINE 1

The legs of the bedErosion begins at the foundation · Changes to 27 頤

The first damage appears where the structure meets the ground. Treat small failures of support as early warnings rather than cosmetic defects.

Stripping the bed at its legs means destroying what is below.

LINE 2

The frame of the bedIsolation lets damage advance · Changes to 04 蒙

Erosion has moved from the feet into the supporting frame. Without allies or reinforcement, the remaining correctness is progressively undermined.

Stripping the bed at its frame means there is not yet any support or association.

LINE 3

Separate from the strippingBreak alignment with the destructive pattern · Changes to 52 艮

One can stand inside a declining environment without serving its decline. Withdraw identification from the corrosive group and preserve the line of integrity.

There is no blame in separating from the stripping because connection with those above and below is lost.

LINE 4

The bed reaches the skinThe danger is now immediate · Changes to 35 晉

The protective layers are gone and the loss touches the person directly. Stop treating the situation as preventive maintenance; immediate protection is required.

Stripping the bed to the skin means disaster has drawn very near.

LINE 5

A string of fishOrder the yielding forces under proper guidance · Changes to 20 觀

What was dispersing can be brought into sequence. Coordinated yielding under legitimate relationship transforms uncontrolled erosion into an orderly transition.

Receiving favour like the people of the palace means there is ultimately no resentment.

LINE 6

The great fruit remains uneatenPreserve the seed or destroy the shelter · Changes to 02 坤

One viable principle survives the collapse. The cultivated person is carried by the people because the seed was protected; destructive conduct ultimately strips away its own shelter.

The cultivated person gains a carriage because the people carry him; the lesser person strips the dwelling and becomes unusable in the end.

Strategic application

Reduce exposure, reinforce support and preserve what remains capable of renewal.

Work and leadership

Use Bo when a team, institution or strategy is losing the conditions that once carried it. Protect the base before asking for more output.

  • Pause expansion and remove nonessential load.
  • Identify which supports are already failing.
  • Preserve people and capabilities needed later.

Relationships

Relational erosion often starts below visibility: lost trust, uneven care and repeated small withdrawals. Address the base before demanding closeness.

  • Name what no longer provides support.
  • Stop extracting from an exhausted bond.
  • Protect dignity even when a form must end.

Timing and decisions

Bo is timely when decline is already underway and resistance would spend the final reserves. Strategic stopping prevents total depletion.

  • Distinguish reversible loss from terminal decline.
  • Do not confuse stillness with helplessness.
  • Save the seed for the returning cycle.
Diagnostic

Bo is constructive when reduction protects foundations and preserves future renewal.

Aligned expression

  • Decline is acknowledged without denial.
  • Expansion stops before reserves disappear.
  • Support below receives renewed investment.
  • The essential seed remains intact.

Distorted expression

  • Image is protected while foundations fail.
  • More weight is added to a weakening system.
  • Necessary endings become personal shame.
  • The final resource is consumed to delay change.
