復Fu.Return.
Thunder stirs beneath Earth: the first firm line returns after decline. Fu describes recovery at its earliest stage, a natural turning point that must be protected before it becomes visible growth.
The decisive moment in renewal is the first honest turn back toward the path.
Fu places Thunder beneath Earth. Movement exists, but it remains protected inside receptive stillness like life returning at the winter solstice.
One firm line enters at the base after six yielding positions in Kun. The change is small in appearance but fundamental in direction.
Return is therefore neither nostalgia nor instant restoration. It is the recovery of correct orientation, repeated until a renewed pattern becomes strong enough to move outward.
Thunder within. Earth without.
Movement is held inside receptivity. The new impulse is real, but wise containment protects it from premature exposure.
Notice the turn. Protect the beginning. Repeat the path. Let strength grow.
Fu describes renewal as lawful recurrence: the correct impulse returns, gathers support and becomes capable of purposeful movement.
Recognise what has returned
The first firm impulse may be small, but its direction matters more than its current scale.
Move with the cycle
Renewal advances through responsiveness to timing, not through forcing the new impulse to prove itself too early.
Allow recurrence to do its work
Return is strengthened through repetition. Build a reliable rhythm instead of demanding one dramatic reversal.
Advance after direction is restored
Movement becomes beneficial once the underlying course is correct and the returning strength has begun to grow.
Image principle: Thunder rests within Earth and forms Return. At the solstice the gates were closed, travel paused and the new cycle was protected in stillness.
Return reveals the living impulse at the heart of the cycle.
The governing proposition
Return brings progress. Going out and coming in are without distress; companions arrive without blame. The way turns and returns; in seven days comes return. It is beneficial to have somewhere to go.
Renewal restores circulation and relationship. Once the course has turned, movement can resume without forcing the timing.
The firm returns and begins to grow
Return brings progress because the firm returns. Movement proceeds through receptivity; the path turns and comes back according to the movement of Heaven. Going forward is beneficial because the firm is growing.
The commentary sees in this quiet turning the heart of Heaven and Earth: life renews itself through patterned return.
Protect renewal before outward activity resumes
Thunder within Earth forms Return. At the solstice the ancient kings closed the passes; merchants did not travel, and rulers did not inspect the regions.
A genuine beginning needs quiet. Suspend unnecessary movement so the returning impulse can consolidate.
Six distances from return.
The lines show immediate correction, supportive return, repeated recovery, independent return, wholehearted return and finally the danger of missing the turning point entirely.
Return from no great distanceCorrect early · Changes to 02 坤
Turn back before deviation becomes identity. Rapid self-correction prevents the mistake from accumulating into regret and produces great good fortune.
Returning from no great distance is how one cultivates oneself.
Restful returnHumility toward what is good · Changes to 19 臨
Return becomes easier in the presence of a sound example. Lowering oneself toward humane influence allows recovery to feel natural rather than punitive.
The good fortune of restful return comes from lowering oneself toward benevolence.
Repeated returnInstability is risky, but correction remains possible · Changes to 36 明夷
Falling away and returning repeatedly creates danger, but not final blame. Keep correcting; consistency may still be developing even when direction is known.
The danger of repeated return is, by principle, without blame.
Walking in the midst, returning aloneFollow the path without waiting for consensus · Changes to 51 震
A correct return may require separating from the surrounding pattern. Move back toward the way even if the people around you have not yet turned.
Walking in the midst and returning alone means following the Way.
Wholehearted returnExamine yourself from the centre · Changes to 03 屯
Return is now substantial rather than tentative. Honest self-examination confirms the course from within, leaving no need for regret.
Wholehearted return is without regret because the centre examines itself.
Missing the returnA lost turning point compounds the damage · Changes to 27 頤
When the moment of correction is repeatedly ignored, force magnifies the error. Do not launch a major campaign from a lost orientation; the consequences may take years to repair.
The misfortune of missing the return comes from opposing the proper way of leadership.
Protect the first correct movement and build recovery through repeatable rhythm.
Work and leadership
Use Fu when direction has begun to recover after drift, exhaustion or failure. Start with one correct operating rhythm before scaling.
- Correct course while the deviation is small.
- Create conditions that protect early recovery.
- Repeat the right action before expanding it.
Relationships
Return in relationships begins with a credible turn toward honesty, presence or repair. Consistency matters more than one dramatic gesture.
- Acknowledge deviation without self-condemnation.
- Make the first repair specific and observable.
- Let renewed trust grow at its natural pace.
Timing and decisions
Fu is timely at the first reliable sign of reversal. Pause unnecessary activity long enough to distinguish genuine renewal from a temporary reaction.
- Notice what has changed direction at the base.
- Protect it from premature expectations.
- Advance once the new rhythm can sustain itself.
Fu is constructive when correction is early, rhythm is protected and renewed strength is allowed to grow.
Aligned expression
- Deviation is corrected before it compounds.
- Stillness protects the emerging impulse.
- Supportive people are allowed to gather.
- Movement resumes from restored direction.
Distorted expression
- Recovery is forced to perform too soon.
- Repeated relapse becomes an excuse to quit.
- Nostalgia is mistaken for genuine return.
- The turning point is ignored until force replaces timing.
