無妄Wu Wang.Innocence.
Thunder moves beneath Heaven: action arises from a strong, uncontrived centre. Wu Wang describes freedom from falsity, alignment with what is correct and the limits of intention when circumstances are not ours to control.
Act from what is true, but do not assume sincerity guarantees control of the outcome.
Wu Wang places Heaven above Thunder. Strong creative order guides spontaneous movement, producing action that is direct without being fabricated.
The Chinese 無妄 points to the absence of falsity, delusion or reckless presumption. Its innocence is ethical and structural, not childish.
Correctness remains essential. When the course is not right, pure self-image cannot prevent error; when timing is exhausted, even sincere action should stop.
Thunder within. Heaven without.
Movement is vigorous yet governed by creative order. Natural action becomes powerful when it answers reality rather than a manufactured agenda.
Remove false motive. Stay correct. Respond naturally. Respect the limit.
Wu Wang joins spontaneous action to disciplined alignment: what is genuine must still answer timing, position and consequence.
Act without fabrication
Remove the private story, manipulative agenda and imagined guarantee. Meet the actual situation directly.
Join movement to strength
Natural action is not passivity. It moves decisively because the inner motive and outer principle are aligned.
Test sincerity through correctness
Feeling innocent is insufficient. The course must remain ethically and structurally sound.
Do not force an exhausted course
When timing or direction is wrong, further action creates error even if the original intention felt pure.
Image principle: Thunder moves beneath Heaven and all beings receive their natural integrity. The ancient kings aligned with the seasons and nourished the myriad things.
Freedom from falsity aligns movement with the mandate of Heaven.
The governing proposition
無妄:元亨,利貞。其匪正有眚,不利有攸往。
Innocence brings great progress. Correctness is beneficial. If the course is not correct, there is error, and it is not beneficial to go forward.
Authenticity opens movement only when it remains aligned with what is right.
The firm becomes master within
無妄,剛自外來,而為主於內。動而健,剛中而應,大亨以正,天之命也。其匪正有眚,不利有攸往。無妄之往,何之矣?天命不祐,行矣哉?
In Wu Wang the firm comes from outside and becomes master within. There is movement with strength, and great progress through correctness—this is the mandate of Heaven.
Without correctness, where could uncontrived action go? Sincerity cannot turn a misaligned course into a supported one.
Nourish each thing according to its time
天下雷行,物與無妄;先王以茂對時,育萬物。
Thunder moves under all Heaven, and the myriad things receive their natural integrity. The ancient kings responded fully to the seasons and nourished all beings.
Right action supports the nature and timing of what is present rather than imposing one manufactured pattern upon everything.
Six tests of uncontrived action.
The lines distinguish direct movement, work without grasping, undeserved misfortune, steadfast correctness, unnecessary intervention and action continued beyond its proper time.
