Thunder moves within the Lake: initiative adapts to what can receive it. Sui describes responsive alignment—choosing what deserves support while preserving correctness, timing and independent judgment.
Adaptation remains intelligent only when it follows a clear standard.
Sui places Lake above Thunder. Inner movement enters an outer field of exchange, responsiveness and shared satisfaction.
The firm comes beneath the yielding: effective leadership lowers itself enough to respond, while those who follow retain responsibility for what they choose.
The useful question is not “Who should I obey?” It is “What direction, person or condition is worth aligning with now—and what standard keeps that alignment correct?”
Thunder within. Lake without.
Initiative becomes responsive rather than forceful. Movement listens to the field and adjusts without losing its governing principle.
Read the time. Choose the worthy. Adapt the form. Preserve the standard.
Sui treats following as active judgment: responsiveness produces progress only when alignment remains sincere, timely and correct.
Join movement to receptivity
Initiative gains cooperation when it can listen, adjust and create a field people can willingly enter.
Open the path through alignment
Great progress becomes possible when movement fits the time and the relationship between leader and follower is sound.
Keep a governing standard
Adaptation without correctness becomes drift. The principle determines what deserves continued support.
Follow the time
Responsiveness means changing pace, role or method as conditions change—not becoming attached to one form.
Image principle: Thunder rests within the Lake and forms Following. At nightfall, the cultivated person turns inward for rest, following the natural rhythm rather than forcing endless activity.
Following becomes constructive when responsiveness remains joined to correctness.
The governing proposition
隨：元亨利貞，無咎。
Following brings great progress. Constancy in what is correct is beneficial; then there is no blame.
Responsiveness is not enough by itself. A sound standard keeps adaptation from turning into dependency or drift.
Movement adapts through joyful response
隨，剛來而下柔，動而說，隨。大亨貞，無咎，而天下隨時，隨時之義大矣哉！
The firm comes and places itself below the yielding; movement joins with openness and satisfaction. Through great progress and correctness there is no blame, and all under Heaven follows the time.
The commentary makes timing central: appropriate following is a living response to conditions, not fixed obedience.
Follow the rhythm into rest
澤中有雷，隨；君子以嚮晦入宴息。
Thunder within the Lake forms Following. Toward nightfall, the cultivated person goes inside for rest.
Responsiveness includes stopping. Intelligent timing follows the cycle of engagement and recovery rather than forcing movement without end.

Examine what your immediate attachment costs. Following what is smaller, easier or nearer may cause the loss of a more mature alliance.
小象傳 · 係小子，弗兼與也.Attachment to the small means that both relationships cannot be maintained together.

六三：係丈夫，失小子。隨有求得，利居貞。
Choose the alliance capable of carrying the work. Letting go of the lesser attachment brings what is sought, provided the commitment remains correct.

九四：隨有獲，貞凶。有孚在道，以明，何咎。
Being followed can become a conflict of interest. Make sincerity, method and purpose visible so influence serves the path rather than personal accumulation.
小象傳 · 隨有獲，其義凶也；有孚在道，明功也.Gaining followers carries danger in principle; sincerity on the path makes the achievement clear.
Sincere toward excellenceLet the worthy become the standard · Changes to 51 震
九五：孚于嘉，吉。
Commit to what is genuinely excellent. Central authority becomes fortunate when allegiance is directed toward quality rather than convenience or applause.
小象傳 · 孚于嘉，吉；位正中也.Sincerity toward what is excellent is favourable because the position is correct and central.
Bound and heldFollowing reaches ritual commitment · Changes to 25 無妄
上六：拘係之，乃從維之。王用亨于西山。
At the extreme, following becomes a binding covenant. Make such commitment conscious, honour its source and recognise when loyalty has become constraint.
小象傳 · 拘係之，上窮也.Being bound and held shows that following has reached its extreme.
Follow intelligently: adapt the form while preserving the standard.
Work and leadership
Strong leadership knows when to lead, when to listen and when to follow better information or a more capable centre.
- Match authority to the actual situation.
- Make the governing standard visible.
- Do not collect followers for personal security.
Relationships
Every attachment strengthens one relationship while reducing capacity for another. Choose allegiance rather than drifting into it.
- Notice what each bond asks you to release.
- Prefer mature reciprocity over easy dependency.
- Do not confuse loyalty with permanent submission.
Timing and decisions
Sui is timely when conditions are changing and success depends on responsive alignment rather than rigid insistence.
- Follow evidence instead of sunk cost.
- Change method without abandoning principle.
- Include withdrawal and rest in the rhythm.
Sui is constructive when responsiveness serves discernment rather than dependency.
