Hexagram 61 · 中孚 · Zhōng Fú

中孚Zhong Fu.Inner Truth.

Wind moves above Lake: influence travels across an open centre and receives a genuine response. Zhong Fu concerns trustworthiness rooted so deeply within that words, agreements and actions carry conviction without coercion.

䷼
Trust becomes consequential when the centre is empty enough to receive—and stable enough not to be manipulated.
Core situation

Make the inside and outside answer to the same truth.

Zhong Fu is not simply honesty as confession. It is fidelity between intention, speech and conduct. The open central lines suggest receptivity, while the firm lines around them provide the structure that keeps openness from becoming credulity.

Its influence reaches even “pigs and fishes”—beings conventionally regarded as difficult to influence—because genuine trust does not depend on performance. It creates the confidence needed to cross difficulty, make commitments and judge with humanity.

Structural anatomy

Wind above. Lake below.

Lake opens and responds; Wind penetrates and carries influence. Two yielding lines form a receptive centre, enclosed by firmness above and below.

Hexagram statement

The governing proposition

Inner Truth. Pigs and fishes: good fortune. It is beneficial to cross the great river. Constancy is beneficial.

Commentary on the Judgment

An open vessel crosses danger

Yielding is within and firmness gains the centre. Joy and gentle penetration allow trust to transform the state. Sincerity reaches even pigs and fishes; the hollow wooden vessel makes the great crossing possible.

The Great Image

Examine judgment with humanity

Wind above the Lake: Inner Truth. The noble one deliberates over legal cases and delays executions.

Six changing-line positions

Six tests of sincerity and trust.

LINE 1

Prepared sincerityGood fortune; divided attention brings unrest · Changes to 59 渙

Establish the basis of trust before extending it outward. A second hidden agenda disturbs the calm that genuine commitment requires.

The first line is fortunate because its intention has not changed.

LINE 2

A crane calls in the shadeIts young answers; shared value creates resonance · Changes to 42 益

What is genuine calls forth a natural response. Worth shared freely binds people more deeply than persuasion or display.

The young answers because the response is wished from the centre.

LINE 3

Meeting an adversaryNow beating drums, now stopping; now weeping, now singing · Changes to 9 小畜

When inner stability depends on another person, emotion oscillates with every signal. Recover the centre before treating intensity as truth.

Drumming and stopping arise because the position is not appropriate.

LINE 4

The moon is nearly fullThe paired horse is lost; no blame · Changes to 10 履

Approaching fulfilment requires leaving the familiar counterpart. Releasing factional dependence allows loyalty to serve the larger centre.

Losing the paired horse means breaking from its kind and turning upward.

LINE 5

Trust binds firmlyNo blame · Changes to 41 損

Credibility at the centre becomes a binding force. People remain connected because promises, power and conduct are aligned.

Trust binds because the position is correct and appropriate.

LINE 6

A cock’s call rises to heavenPersistence brings misfortune · Changes to 60 節

A loud claim cannot substitute for grounded truth. When reputation rises beyond substance, maintaining the performance becomes dangerous.

How could a cock’s call rising to heaven endure?

Strategic application

Build trust through correspondence between promise, evidence and action.

Work and leadership

Make commitments that can be verified, share value and allow scrutiny. Credibility becomes institutional when leaders practise the standards they communicate.

Relationships

Listen without surrendering discernment. Trust grows through repeated correspondence between what is felt, said and done—not through intensity alone.

Timing and decisions

Before a consequential crossing, test the centre: Is the motive stable? Are incentives aligned? Will the commitment survive when no one is watching?

Diagnostic

Zhong Fu is aligned when sincerity produces reliable resonance.

Aligned expression

  • Speech and conduct reinforce each other.
  • Openness is supported by sound boundaries.
  • Trust survives verification and difficulty.
  • Judgment includes both evidence and humanity.

Distorted expression

  • Emotional intensity is mistaken for truth.
  • Hidden agendas fracture apparent agreement.
  • Credibility depends on performance or status.
  • Claims rise higher than the evidence supporting them.

Let trust arise from a stable centre—then let every word and action carry the same truth.
