謙Qian.Modesty.
A mountain rests within Earth: real substance remains present without demanding display. Qian describes proportion, self-governance and the redistribution of excess toward what is lacking.
Strength becomes durable when it does not need to exaggerate itself.
Qian places Earth above Mountain. The mountain’s real height is contained within receptive Earth instead of being displayed above it.
The single firm line carries substance in the inner trigram while yielding lines surround it. Capability remains real, but its expression is measured.
The useful question is not “How do I appear smaller?” It is “What adjustment brings contribution, recognition and distribution back into proportion?”
Mountain within. Earth without.
Inner substance accepts an outwardly receptive position. Height is not denied; it is integrated into a larger field.
Lower display. Preserve substance. Correct imbalance. Complete the work.
Qian treats modesty as an active method for regulating excess, strengthening what is insufficient and sustaining contribution through completion.
Make room for movement
Modesty produces progress because capacity can circulate without being blocked by self-inflation.
Carry the work to completion
Modesty is proven over time through consistency, not through one restrained gesture.
Correct excess and deficiency
Fullness is reduced while genuine insufficiency is supported, restoring proportion to the field.
Distribute according to reality
Fairness is calibrated to actual conditions rather than imposed as identical treatment.
Image principle: A mountain within Earth forms Modesty. The cultivated person reduces what is excessive, increases what is lacking and distributes according to measure.
Modesty allows real substance to remain effective without becoming obstructive.
The governing proposition
Modesty brings progress. The cultivated person brings things to completion.
The virtue is operational: measured conduct keeps the path open long enough for work to reach a proper end.
Every domain corrects what is overfull
Heaven, Earth, spirits and human society diminish fullness and favour modesty. In honour it shines; in a low position it cannot be surpassed.
Modesty aligns conduct with a recurring corrective movement: excess becomes unstable, while proportion earns durable support.
Balance the distribution
A mountain within Earth forms Modesty. The cultivated person reduces the excessive, increases the deficient and distributes in balanced measure.
The image converts humility into design: assess actual weight, then restore proportion across the whole system.
Six expressions of modesty.
The lines move from deep self-cultivation through recognised sincerity, sustained labour, active adjustment, corrective intervention and the final need to bring order close to home.
Modest upon modestLower yourself to cultivate substance · Changes to 36 明夷
Deep humility creates readiness for difficulty. Self-cultivation at the beginning makes a major crossing favourable.
The deeply modest cultivated person nourishes the self through a low position.
Modesty that is heardInner sincerity becomes recognisable · Changes to 46 升
Do not manufacture a modest image. When restraint comes from the centre, its tone carries naturally and constancy is favourable.
Recognised modesty is favourable because it is obtained in the centre of the heart.
Labouring modestyComplete the work without claiming the centre · Changes to 02 坤
Let achievement remain joined to effort. The person who labours without self-inflation earns support and reaches a favourable completion.
People willingly support the cultivated person whose achievement remains modest.
Exercise modestyAdjustment is appropriate everywhere · Changes to 62 小過
Modesty must become action, not posture. Deliberately adjust conduct, allocation and recognition without abandoning responsibility.
Nothing is unfavourable because active modesty does not violate the proper pattern.
Not enriched through neighboursCorrect what refuses proportion · Changes to 39 蹇
Modesty does not forbid firm correction. When influence is not based on wealth, disciplined intervention may restore order without self-interest.
Corrective action is used against what refuses the proper order.
Modesty that is proclaimedBring discipline back to one’s own domain · Changes to 52 艮
Begin correction with the field you actually govern. When the aspiration remains unfulfilled, discipline one’s own domain before claiming wider authority.
Proclaimed modesty means the intention is not yet fulfilled; force may be used to correct one’s own domain.
Use modesty to restore proportion without weakening capability.
Work and leadership
Let strong work speak clearly while distributing credit, attention and resources according to actual contribution and need.
- Lower display without hiding responsibility.
- Move surplus toward neglected capacity.
- Finish the work before claiming the achievement.
Relationships
Healthy modesty makes space for others without pretending that every person, role or contribution is identical.
- Receive appreciation without feeding superiority.
- Name needs without self-erasure.
- Correct imbalance without humiliating anyone.
Timing and decisions
Modesty is timely when excess visibility, certainty or force would make the situation harder to correct.
- Reduce the element that dominates the field.
- Support what is genuinely underdeveloped.
- Intervene firmly only where proportion requires it.
Qian is constructive when accuracy replaces both inflation and self-erasure.
Aligned expression
- Strength is acknowledged without exhibition.
- Credit and resources follow actual contribution.
- Excess is reduced and deficiency supported.
- Responsibility is carried through completion.
Distorted expression
- Self-denial is mistaken for virtue.
- Competence is hidden to avoid visibility.
- Modesty becomes performance or manipulation.
- Necessary authority is abandoned.
