Hexagram 16 · 豫 · Yù

豫Yu.Enthusiasm.

Thunder rises from Earth: stored readiness becomes coordinated movement. Yu describes the mobilisation of energy, support and collective momentum around a direction that can actually be carried out.

䷏ Thunder over Earth Movement arising from readiness Mobilisation · rhythm · coordinated action Pair: 15 Qian
䷏
Enthusiasm is not excitement without structure. It is energy organised around a direction that people and resources are prepared to support.
Core situation

Momentum becomes useful when readiness, direction and movement agree.

Yu places Thunder above Earth. Receptive capacity below supports decisive movement above: preparation becomes action instead of remaining latent.

The single firm fourth line becomes the organising centre to which the yielding lines respond. Influence comes from a direction capable of gathering participation.

The useful question is not “How excited do we feel?” It is “What preparation, mandate and rhythm can convert energy into coordinated movement?”

Structural anatomy

Earth within. Thunder without.

Receptive capacity supports outward movement. What has been prepared below the surface can now be activated and organised.

The judgment in four movements

Prepare the field. Establish direction. Gather support. Move in rhythm.

Yu treats enthusiasm as mobilised readiness: receptive capacity follows a clear centre, allowing people and resources to move together.

順以動

Move through responsiveness

Action becomes effective when it grows from conditions the field can receive rather than from imposed excitement.

Give momentum a centre

A clear organising direction allows willingness, resources and participation to gather around action.

建侯

Establish responsible authority

Before mobilisation, define who carries mandate, accountability and the power to coordinate the field.

行師

Organise collective force

Shared energy needs rhythm, roles and discipline if it is to become sustained execution rather than noise.

Image principle: Thunder emerging from Earth forms Enthusiasm. The ancient kings made music to honour virtue, coordinating collective feeling through ordered rhythm and shared remembrance.

Received text and interpretive layers

Enthusiasm joins receptive capacity to disciplined movement.

Hexagram statement

The governing proposition

Enthusiasm. It is favourable to establish leaders and set collective force in motion.

Momentum becomes legitimate when authority and coordinated action are established before energy is deployed.

Commentary on the Judgment

Responsiveness gives movement its reach

The firm line receives response and its intention is carried out. Receptive movement accords with the order through which Heaven, Earth and human institutions act.

Yu is not emotional excess. It is movement whose timing and structure allow willing response.

The Great Image

Give shared feeling an ordered form

Thunder emerges and Earth is stirred: Enthusiasm. The ancient kings made music to honour virtue and joined communal ceremony with ancestral memory.

The image shows how rhythm, culture and shared reference can organise collective energy without reducing it to coercion.

Six changing-line positions

Six conditions of enthusiasm.

The lines move from noisy premature confidence through grounded discernment, dependence on external approval, genuine mobilisation, persistent strain and the possibility of changing course before enthusiasm becomes delusion.

LINE 1

Proclaimed enthusiasmNoise outruns substance · Changes to 51 震

Do not announce momentum before it exists. Excitement expressed from a weak beginning becomes exposure without capacity.

Proclaimed enthusiasm at the beginning is unfortunate because the intention has already reached exhaustion.

LINE 2

Firm as stoneRecognise the direction before the day ends · Changes to 40 解

Stay grounded enough to read the signal early. Clear inner criteria prevent enthusiasm from carrying judgment away.

Not waiting until the day ends is favourable because the position is centred and correct.

LINE 3

Looking upward for enthusiasmDependence on approval produces regret · Changes to 62 小過

Do not wait for another person’s energy to authorise your movement. Looking upward for cues and then delaying correction compounds regret.

Looking upward in enthusiasm brings regret because the position is not appropriate.

LINE 4

The source of enthusiasmGather support without suspicion · Changes to 02 坤

Become a credible centre for mobilisation. When direction is real and doubt does not fragment it, allies gather closely around the work.

The source of enthusiasm gains greatly because its intention is carried out on a large scale.

LINE 5

Persistent strainRemain functional without pretending to be well · Changes to 45 萃

Endurance is possible, but the condition remains constrained. Do not mistake continued operation for full health; preserve the centre while addressing chronic pressure.

Persistent illness comes from riding upon the firm line; it does not die because the centre is not lost.

LINE 6

Darkened enthusiasmChange course even after commitment · Changes to 35 晉

Completion does not remove the right to revise. When enthusiasm has become darkened, a genuine change of course prevents blame.

Darkened enthusiasm at the top cannot be allowed to continue for long.

Strategic application

Use enthusiasm to convert readiness into coordinated movement.

Work and leadership

Build commitment around a credible direction, then give collective energy roles, rhythm and accountable leadership.

  • Establish mandate before mobilisation.
  • Translate excitement into roles and sequence.
  • Keep feedback active after momentum begins.

Relationships

Shared enthusiasm can strengthen connection when it does not demand emotional conformity or outsource judgment.

  • Invite participation without manufacturing pressure.
  • Distinguish genuine resonance from social contagion.
  • Let people revise commitment when conditions change.

Timing and decisions

Yu is timely when preparation exists, leadership is credible and a field of willing support is ready to move.

  • Do not confuse anticipation with evidence.
  • Read resistance before increasing force.
  • Change course when enthusiasm darkens judgment.
Diagnostic

Yu is constructive when energy remains joined to preparation, direction and review.

Aligned expression

  • Readiness precedes public momentum.
  • Authority and accountability are explicit.
  • People gather around a credible direction.
  • Energy becomes disciplined collective action.

Distorted expression

  • Noise is mistaken for commitment.
  • Excitement suppresses contrary evidence.
  • Belonging depends on emotional conformity.
  • Momentum continues after direction has failed.
