未濟Wei Ji.Before Completion.
Fire rises above Water while every line stands outside its proper place. Wei Ji describes the final approach: possibility is alive, correspondences exist and success is near—but the crossing fails if concentration is abandoned before the last step.
The last stage demands the same discipline as the first.
Wei Ji ends the received sequence without presenting a final static state. The young fox is nearly across the stream, yet wets its tail at the last moment. Progress remains possible, but premature confidence wastes the effort already invested.
The hexagram asks for discrimination: identify what belongs where, restrain movement when conditions are not ready and act firmly once the true crossing begins. Completion is achieved through continuity of purpose, not through excitement about being almost finished.
Fire above. Water below.
Fire rises and Water descends, so the forces move apart rather than combine. Every line is out of place, yet each has a corresponding partner—disorder contains the potential for reorganisation.
Possibility remains open—but only disciplined continuity completes it.
The governing proposition
Before Completion brings success. A young fox has nearly crossed, but wets its tail. Nothing is beneficial.
Correspondence exists within disorder
Success is possible because yielding holds the centre. The young fox is nearly across but has not left the danger; wetting its tail shows failure to continue through the end. Though the lines are misplaced, firm and yielding still respond to one another.
Distinguish things and place them correctly
Fire above Water: Before Completion. The noble one carefully distinguishes things and assigns each to its proper place.
Six stages in completing the crossing.
The tail gets wetRegret · Changes to 38 睽
Movement begins without understanding the depth or limit. The setback is small, but it exposes an immature estimate of the situation.
Wetting the tail shows failure to know the limit.
Drag back the wheelConstancy brings good fortune · Changes to 35 晉
Restraint preserves the vehicle for the correct moment. Controlled delay is progress when it prevents a premature entry into danger.
Constancy is fortunate because centrality makes the action correct.
Not yet acrossAdvancing brings misfortune; crossing the great river is beneficial · Changes to 50 鼎
Unprepared advance is dangerous, but commitment to the real transition is necessary. Stop drifting forward; organise the full crossing.
Advancing before completion is unfortunate because the position is inappropriate.
Correctness brings good fortuneRegret disappears; three years of campaigning earn reward · Changes to 4 蒙
Once direction is correct, sustained effort must carry it through. Difficult unfinished work may require years, not a final burst of enthusiasm.
Correctness brings good fortune because the intention is carried into action.
The noble one’s lightCorrectness brings good fortune and no regret; sincerity is auspicious · Changes to 6 訟
Near completion, trustworthy leadership makes the route visible. Clarity and sincerity coordinate people more effectively than pressure.
The noble one’s light is fortunate in the radiance it spreads.
Confidence while drinking wineNo blame—until the head is submerged and confidence loses what is right · Changes to 40 解
Celebrate without surrendering proportion. Confidence is deserved, but excess at the final threshold can still overturn the result.
Drinking until the head is submerged shows failure to know the proper limit.
Protect the final mile from impatience, fatigue and premature celebration.
Work and leadership
Define completion criteria, ownership and handover before declaring success. Separate launch readiness from excitement and keep decision quality high through the close.
Relationships
Do not confuse an important conversation with a fully changed pattern. Trust the direction while continuing the behaviours that make reconciliation real.
Timing and decisions
Delay when the vehicle is not ready; commit when the crossing is truly organised. The distinction between hesitation and discipline is preparation.
Wei Ji is aligned when unfinished work retains direction, discipline and hope.
